"I desire you. That is more than love—for me! You are here because there is no resistance to my desire. You can become a queen. In this breast and in Eitopomar in southern Brazil. A queen over primeval forests, wild animals, tame and wild people, valleys, rocks, and distances. Who in this contemptible region can give you more?"

Hull and "Balling"
Where Fritz Lang begins his film adaptation of Dr. Mabuse the Gambler with the titular character shuffling a deck of photographs of himself in various disguises and orchestrating the theft of a commercial contract, Norbert Jacques' novel starts at the exclusive club with Edgar Hull (shown near the end of Act 2 in Part I of the film) engaged in a tense, high-stakes card game against a venerable gentleman. The author delves into the mindset of the young millionaire as he is besieged by losses and is subconsciously disturbed by what's happening to him.
This enigmatic stranger, going by the name Balling (Mabuse in disguise), armed with the powers of hypnosis, ensnares Hull in his web and leaves a haunting influence over him.
