Lukas is nearly tackled by their hugs when he steps from the portal and stares as the brunette who’s holding him like their life depends on it presses a kiss to his cheek.

“Um.”

The taller girl on his other side holds him in a vise grip, which loosens after his uncertain reaction to the relieved kiss.

“Oh no. I know that look. Lukas, what’s my name.”

He stares, frozen in place.

“Do I... know you?”

The girl’s shoulders slump and she looks to the brunette.

A week’s vacation was an instant, unanimous decision from all the members of the New Order, followed by enthusiastic preparations for blessed free time spent in the quiet of Lukas’ cabin. Ivor was quick to volunteer to keep watch over Beacontown for the time they were gone.

The vacation went by much too fast, however.

They’d all started the walk back to Beacontown together on the final evening, still not ready to part ways.

Halfway to town, something rose over the horizon and streaked into the sky.

It burst into blue light with a crack that made Radar jump and the rest of the group stop in their tracks. The blue twinkled back down as it faded into the sunset.

Olivia was the first to break the silence: “... Was that a firework?”

Three more followed suit before anyone could answer.

“That’s coming from town, right?”

Suddenly, their leisurely walk was much faster paced, the six of them reaching the front gates in a matter of minutes. Jesse stopped first at the sight of lava pouring over the walls guarding town.

“Oh man.”

They squinted up at a figure on the top of the gates.

“Nell? Is that you? What’s going on?”

She stared at them, frozen in place, before turning around and shouting,

“Dudes! They’re back! Ivor, stop the party!”

“Good morning, Romeo.” Seeing Jesse in pajamas and not armor bordered on uncomfortable after everything that’d happened.

Romeo simply grunted and shuffled past, rubbing his eyes. Sleep was still new to him, after decades of never needing to. He sat at an empty table, still wary of Jesse. Why extend so much hospitality after receiving nothing but pain and difficulty?

Jesse stood, moving to the counter.

“I uh. Made breakfast. I figured you’d like something nice to eat after-“ Romeo gave them a look between annoyance and pleading when they turned to him. He didn’t deserve to be pitied. “Um. Here. It’s my recipe.” They put a plate down in front of him.

Bread.

Still warm.

Romeo couldn’t pull his eyes from the plate, hot tears clouding his vision. Fresh bread...

When it got to the point where she couldn’t walk without Lukas and Jesse on either side, Petra wasn’t bothered anymore by being treated differently because she was sick, but because she couldn’t be herself.

They walked her into the only shelter they’d found, a small, damp cave. The rest of the team watched quietly as the three entered, Petra leaning heavily on Lukas until her legs refused to move anymore and gave out.

“Easy! Let’s take her over against the wall, Jesse.” The two struggled with her limp body and all Petra could do was let her head lull back to look at them.

“I wanna help. Please.”

Lukas knelt next to her, taking her hand. Jesse watched in nervous silence.

“I know you do. We need you to help us by taking care of yourself...”
