Nongsa was beautiful, yet the trip itself was decidedly a letdown. Much of the time was spent inside the (inadequately managed) resort itself. The weather was prohibitively hot, and the lack of public transportation, combined with reckless motorcyclists, made it unfeasible to access other beaches and sightseeing spots.
Practical lessons
Do not stay in all-inclusive resorts next time. You do not come here to explore the hotel; you come here to explore the island. Yet sometimes poor public infrastructure and lack of walkability made it prohibitively difficult to choose otherwise.
Plan better next time. There has to be another way.
Research on bike rentals.
Seriously consider getting a motorcycle license, and dress more conservatively for your own safety. You are a female solo traveller, after all.
It was a good idea to bring a water bottle.
Many questions, not enough answers
What does it mean to travel like an urban planner? The idea came to me while listening to a podcast interview of Jeff Speck, writer and advocate of walkable cities. Have been friends with a few urban planning/architecture majors, I have always wondered if they saw the world differently than us. Just like an art history student would catch details easily ignored by sloppy outsiders, urban planners, architects and even investment bankers (i.e. Jim Rogers) would surely have been more sophisticated and insightful travelers.
