Shout out to all the freaks and weirdos on tumblr who make my life bearable. I love you.
I saw this on Reddit, and I just want people to really question these things.
I think people kinda ignore the fact you can be bi+ace or gay+aro or whatever, because really acknowledging this would mean there was some sort of implicit privileges that a bi+allo person has and a bi+aspec person lacks.
The concept of split attraction ultimately rests on intersectionality. There is no way to consider these things in any other way - BC ultimately intersectionality is the best frame for understanding privileges. There is no other way to think about it in a multidimensional international world.
I'm a straight+ace guy and I've been sexually assaulted, sexually harassed. My uni experience was and work experience has so far been just constant sex jokes.
One day in April 2019, my mum saw me filling in a Sexual Orientation question on a demographic form. I hadn't really accepted I was asexual, but I was too uncomfortable to say I was heterosexual, so I just put "prefer not to say". She asked me why I did this, got flustered... and walked away (in her mind, the assumption was that I was gay or bi). I found her and she told me "it's okay, whatever you are". I said I was "asexual", she "asked me what it meant. I responded "I don't like anyone that way" (massive oversimplification - I didn't explain my romantic feelings) and she responded by saying "it will change with experience". I shut her down "I'm an adult, I know myself".
Just consider that! In my mum's mind, it's quite fkn clear, that she didn't mind the gender of the partner as long as there was a relationship which was typical. Quite clear aphobia without bi/homophobia.
The next time I came out I had to bring her, what was essentially a slideshow to prevent misunderstanding. But I had mentally accepted just having to elope BC in case she didn't understand.
I told a colleague I was asexual, BC I wanted him to stop making sexual jokes and I wanted to communicate this. The second colleague told me I was too old to start having sex. 🙃💀
