Nokia Lumia 520 accounts for a third of all Windows Phone smartphones, highlights Nokia’s high-end problem
Nokia’s most popular Windows Phone smartphone, the Lumia 520, now accounts for almost a third of all Windows Phone devices sold globally, according to AdDuplex, which collected the data from 2,499 apps running AdDuplex SDK. According to the data, the Lumia 520 accounted for 30.8 percent of all Windows Phone devices. The Lumia 521, a carrier variant of the Lumia 520, accounted for another 3.3 percent, which means the two devices together made up more than a third of all active Windows Phone devices.
Things get a little worrisome when one looks at just Windows Phone 8 smartphones, where the two phones account for 44 percent of all active devices running Windows Phone 8. The report also reveals that Nokia now accounts for almost 92 percent of Windows Phone ecosystem and its share is increasing.
Nokia and Microsoft have a huge high-end problem, with only entry and mid-level Windows Phone devices selling. The Lumia 1020, for instance, does not even figure in the top ten Windows Phone devices. Microsoft has a huge challenge at its hands as it acquires Nokia sometime in the coming quarter as it tries to embark on a services and devices business model, considering Nokia has faileed to compete in the high-end, high-margin smartphone space. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft can change that.
