"You sicken me."
YUNALESCA REMAINED UNMOVING, golden eyes focused intently on the memory that played before her. Her eyes, though glowing, showed no emotion. She neither smiled nor frowned. No muscles made any indication of what she was feeling. After one thousand years, it felt as if she could no longer truly feel anything resembling happiness or joy. It was only a memory now, of who she was when she was alive. The slight beating she felt in her chest, or the warmth on her cheeks â they were ghostly remnants of a life she could only really remember thanks to the constant reminders of the pyre flies. She decided, some time ago, that this emptiness would now be her reality.
âYunalesca. Forgive me. But this will be the last time, I swear it.â Zaon stood before her, clad in his opulent armor. He appeared to be looking into her eyes, deeply. Anyone else witnessing this would have been able to tell easily the truth and passion behind his love for her. But happiness was void from his eyes. In their place was anger, frustration, confusion, desperation. His hands at his side were closed tightly into fists. â THERE MUST BE ANOTHER WAY! â
âNo, my love.â Pyre flies began to react around her body as a ghostly apparition of her own being took her place. The memory lifted a single hand, placing it gently against the face of her husband. He reacts, covering her hand with his. Her eyes, as gold as metal on his body, were full of emotion, but clouded over with mist. There was a great sadness within her, but no signs of anger or uncertainty. âMy father said this would be our only hope.â
The way her voice echoes through the chamber is unfamiliar. It is full of love and hope and agony. Yunalesca is in the midst of a battle within her own heart as she fights back her tears. âDeath and destruction will continue to ravage this world if I donât do anything â if we donât act. My father⊠I do believe his intentions were pure. But this creature he created⊠he gave me the key to calm its destruction. The war has ended, but the suffering has not. People every where will continue to perish if we choose to stay still. I cannot be happy living as we do.â There is a pause, her words an affirmation of what is to come. Lovingly, she strokes his cheek with her thumb as tears fall onto her own. âIs peace not what we truly desired?â
He visibly weakens against her hand â shoulders dropping as she speaks, head hanging low as she looks desperately into his eyes. His anger has subsided, giving way to acceptance. He understands her all too well. As the last survivors of the great city of Zanarkand, he is the only one who understands. âI only fear being without you.â
âMy dear Zaon, my truest and deepest love â know that the bond we share is resilient and true.â Her voice grows loud and strong as she takes him in her arms, wrapping herself around him. â THIS IS ENOUGH TO SHOW YOU WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT ME. NOR I, YOU. â
The pair remain embracing until Yunalesca draws herself away from him. She reaches up toward Zaonâs helmet, removing it carefully from his head. The helmet drops to the floor, and she takes his face into her delicate hands. Their eyes remain locked onto each other, searching each otherâs minds and reliving the life and love they shared. Smiles form across their lips all at once, as if their minds had connected in replaying some wonderful, bright time of their lives. They let themselves bask in this moment, before Zaonâs smile fades into one of sadness as he gives her a nod â Iâm ready â that breaks Yunalescaâs heart.Â
But no, she does not let herself show it. Though the tears continue to fall uncontrollably, she nods in return. She raises herself on her tiptoes, guiding Zaonâs face closer to hers. Before the memory can continue, a large flash of light disrupts the pyre flies, slashing between the image of Yunalesca and Zaon. The pyre flies disperse and left standing in the chamber is the unsent summoner herself, a faint white light beginning to dim at her palm.Â
She remains bound to Zanarkand by her duty, every second since her death turning her heart into a dark void it could never return from. As a summoner, she can will and control the pyre flies as she wishes. Though some days, they appear to think for themselves, reacting to whatever humanity she has left in her, if any at all. Memories like this one remind her of a Yunalesca who once loved and cared and hoped so deeply â a Yunalesca that was no longer here.
âYou sicken me,â he says to her from across the chamber. Her eyes meet his own, a sickly scar ruining his handsome and youthful face. He was one of the few to ever question the Final Aeon and the teachings of Yevon and it was by her hand that he perished. He reminded her of Zaon when he confronted her, and with every day they share stuck in this place, their similarities only grew. That is perhaps the reason she feels angrier than she usually does; the pyre flies sick reenactment did nothing but amplify her negative emotions. There is a rage inside her, but from the outside, she exhibits nothing but cool neutrality. Yunalesca says nothing in return, but chooses to keep his gaze, as tentacles begin to burst from the ground beneath him, wrapping themselves around his legs. They pull down roughly, bringing Auron to his knees. Another rises from the ground, wrapping itself around his neck, tightening slowly but with purpose as Yunalesca turns away from him and descends the steps.Â
There is no one sickened more than myself, I assure you.
