Knowing the full extent of Noelle's dissociation re-contextualizes this dialogue.
So, the standard reading of this is that because Kris is being possessed by the SOUL, something weird is happening to their voice. Noelle is the only person to notice, because she's a longtime friend of theirs (and everyone else in the town is too wrapped up in themselves or too polite to say anything).
But what if it's not the way that Kris sounds, but the way that Noelle hears them?
The glass veil that Noelle describes about her vision is the most vivid and apparent symptom of DPDR, but in truth all of the senses become dull. Taste, touch, pain, and most notably, hearing.
I have DPDR, and when I am dissociated sound becomes... flat. It loses its depth. I can hear things just okay, but it's all very dull.
Of course, if this is all true it would mean that Noelle fails to notice any change in anyone else she hears, but uh... well, maybe that's a major hole. But we'll see?
