“Sleep well, my friend.”
Given that Noel is returning tonight, I can share my Tony Marshall story.
A few years ago, I worked at a DVD shop in London, which he entered asking if we sold blu-rays. I responded with all the human charisma of a dishrag that we did. Once he left, I told my co-workers in stunned surprise I’d just seen the bloke off Casualty. We gathered around the computer to google him, and all nodded in the affirmative that it had indeed been the bloke off Casualty.
I wish I had not been so weird at Tony Marshall, but it’d apparently never crossed my mind that the blokes off Casualty could leave it.
this isn't important in the big picture of things but it's sort of uncomfortable to me that casualty has rewritten connie's character so much to be weirdly ignorant and need lecturing on these things because yeah she's always had an ego but she did not have a very privileged background on old holby and it's also just weird on a meta level because amanda is biracial and ik casualty aren't going to go there but as a biracial brit i feel bad about how ppl act like we don't understand racial issues
I guess they were going for the angle of how covid affects bame and working class people more than upper class and white people. (the theory i saw was to do with vitamin d absorption) but yeah. we're really stuck with charlie while black characters continue to get written out left and right.
Yeah, I was really bothered by that too. I was saying to my family members while we were watching it that it must have been really awkward for Charles and Amanda to film that scene, given Amanda is biracial.
Connie’s definitely not as ignorant or privileged as the writers like to make her out to be. It’s frustrating that they keep ignoring that. She deserves much better writing than she keeps getting, and to not be portrayed as unaware on racial issues and needing to be lectured by Jacob - seriously, did anyone stop and consider that even if the character’s supposed to be white, that’s an uncomfortable scene to give to a biracial actress?
I do think the “BAME and/or working-class people are more affected” angle is the angle they were trying to go for, but they didn’t go for it very well. And it feels like salt in the wound that Noel has been treated as a background character for years, then when they finally give him screentime... it’s so he can die. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
“we’re really stuck with charlie while black characters continue to get written out left and right” - too true. I don’t know how to put this without sounding really callous or rude, but... IRL, Charlie would almost certainly get really sick or die, considering both his age and his history of various health problems. But instead he gets treated like he’s invincible, he’s lucky enough to not get infected at all while Jacob gets sick and Noel dies. Sigh.
