Devils Tower! This is how the whole trip started. I wanted to see it so bad. Close Encounters is one of my fave movies and I wanted to see it up close. I was not disappointed. It is amazing. We walked the base of it which is just less than 2 miles. No, it’s not a tree. It’s made of igneous rock basically cooled down magma. The column are from the igneous rock separating while cooling. Yes, it is big. It rises 867 ft straight up. No, it’s not hollow. It has a flat green and bushy top on it. Yes, people climb this and yeah, people have died doing it. These are all the questions I had and the answers to them. 🤔 It is a sacred place for many indigenous people. In the month of June there is a voluntary climb closure due to native ceremonies. Please don’t be the asshole who climbs during that time. It was quite a beautiful thing to see all the prayer cloths tied to the trees (no photos were taken of this) and to be in such a sacred place. https://www.nps.gov/deto/learn/historyculture/first-stories.htm tells different stories of how Devils Tower came to be. These are worth the read. Wyoming has some of the most beautiful scenery and is really a cool place to explore nature.
