Sick Like Me

What had become of Beyond Birthday?
This was a question she had thought to herself for years. At one point in her life, he and Alternate were all she cared about, the reason she could keep a smile on that nearly permanent sad face of hers. She didn’t have a reason to be happy with out them, she didn’t have a reason to feel anything without them. Those two were always closer with each other than with her, but she could accept this, as it was a very small difference. Though it grew. When L had began to travel, leave them behind, they grew closer, they became something more without L there. She would visit and could tell. The longer she was gone, the more she was unwanted when she would return.
L still didn’t know why she agreed to it, and she wished she didn’t. Watari knew the detective was risking her life, knew that one day she would likely parish due to her line of work. And so he suggested the worst thing, and to avoid a fight with what was suppose to be her father figure, she agreed. L had suffered enough at the hand of her biological father, and though she hated it, that obedience was built into her. She wouldn’t stop Watari because she couldn’t.Â
And it cost her both of her dear friends.
Alternate cracked and broke, taking his life while L was away. News traveled to her quickly, still she didn’t make it. Beyond was gone by the time she got back. Everyone she had ever cared about, that small list of two, was gone. Taken from her because L couldn’t refuse the idea. Because she couldn’t overcome her fear. And though he had never said it, L knew he blamed her for Alternate’s death, for they were alike in many ways, and L too blamed herself. Perhaps if she had been around more, or, really, if she never agreed to the stupid idea in the first place. All her fault. The whole thing. And she had to live with it.Â
Throwing herself into her work, L became cold as ice. There was a sea of emotions going on under the surface, but that thick layer of ice covered it all. At the back of her mind she had wondered where he went. Wondered what had become of Beyond. L had tried time and time again to track him down, nothing ever came up though.
Not until LA.
Not until those murders.
L didn’t have a choice, she had to stop him, she had to make sure he didn’t hurt anyone else. Even himself, as it seemed he tried to light himself on fire. That detective had stopped him and L knew what was coming next, she knew he would have to go to prison. Watari had told her that’s what she needed to do, she needed to let go of her friend because whoever was living in that body now was not Beyond Birthday. Was not her best friend any longer. This was the first time however.
The first time she defied him.
All the arrangements were made, as far as the general public knew he was locked up tight in a prison in LA. However, L had arranged for him to stay with her. This damage was her fault and she was going to fix it, whatever the cost may be, L Lawliet wasn’t going to back down.Â
Entering the dark room, she first noticed how he was restrained. Thin wrists and ankles chained to a metal chair that was attached to the floor. The room had been made special for him at L’s permanent house just outside of LA. She hated seeing him like this, actually, she wasn’t sure how she felt about seeing him in general. He looked so different from what she remembered, and her heart ached in her chest. But nothing showed on her face. Just a blank emotionless stare. The one she gave everyone. At some point she may open up, but right now she had to hide. Otherwise he would get to her, could use her to break free. Had he really become that dangerous? Had he really lost his mind? How L hoped she could fix it. It was the least she could do.
“Beyond Birthday....”
Nothing betrayed her. Not even her voice, though she was restraining herself.
“It’s been.. a long time.”
