hey so i somehow was never into dan and phil's actual content growing up but have been hearing a lot about them through osmosis since at least 2014 tumblr days and thus im now invested enough to actually ask a dedicated phan what's happening.
i vaguely recall something happening last year(?) that was like an announcement/confirmation? i didn't really look into it just saw it across my dash and was like oh cool they're together officially or something? nice. but NOW apparently its a new announcement and now im like. okay wait so what was i seeing before??
i agree that "we already knew" attitudes re: people coming out is annoying as fuck but in this case im genuinely confused. my dash is feeling like a crazy deja vu moment and if you could elaborate i would be eternally grateful <3

I'm not 100% on the timeline but last year they did their live show the Terrible Influence Tour where they did confirm or deny some of the popular phan theories, like confirming they shared a bed on the tourbus etc. and those confirmations/denials were HUGE so that might have been what you saw!!
Up until the latest announcement it was still an unspoken thing though, like the fandom was respecting that it wasn't our business to know the actual definition or details of their relationship beyond what they themselves shared
So the shock of the latest announcement was that they finally defined their relationship to us as romantic, that they finally feel comfortable enough to share it, after all of they've been through, especially for Dan who struggled a lot with his mental health because of the invasiveness--like after everything, they didn't owe anyone any explanations or definitions or forgiveness, but they did share it and did forgive their fans, and that's why this is such a huge deal if that makes sense <3
