"I'm one year closer to my grave, what's there to be happy about?" Noah inquired with his usual pessimism. Even so, he still held that same smile that indicated he wasn't being all too serious.

"Well, nevermind that. Thank you for your wishes. You make me feel less lonely on a day I don't celebrate anymore." He took a parfait in his hands, inspecting it to make sure it wasn't poisoned or something before giving a whistle of approval.

"And you gave me 3... how generous of you. But you surely know I can't eat it all by myself, yes? So..." He turned his head bashfully to the side.

Tai Kamiya: The perfect example of a big brother. He looks out for Kari and the other Tamers of Yggdrasil, keeps everyone out of trouble as best he can, is honest about how he feels and thinks, and tries to be a good influence. Noah admires Tai for doing his best and hopes to be just as good a brother as he is.

Matt Ishida: Noah feels bad for what Matt had gone through in the past, but still sees him as the best example of being a friend. Unfortunately, he gets into trouble with Matt a lot due to his reckless behavior, and the fact that Matt is the most protective of Yggdrasil’s supervisors.

Izzy Izumi: Izzy reminds Noah a lot about the professors back home. So he greatly respects Izzy’s intelligence, despite him clashing with Reflectmon and his Partner on their intellectual differences.

Joe Kido: Noah always wondered how Joe’s heart hasn’t stopped ticking from being worried about everyone. Still, he loved how Joe was attentive to Yggdrasil’s critically injured. Having a nurse for a mother, Noah knew just how hard Joe worked every day to keep everyone alive.

Sora Takenouchi: He sees Sora as one of the greatest mother figures of their time. Noah knows it takes a lot to look after children and infant Digimon are no different, if not more difficult. So Noah tends to help out Sora when she needs it, as not all infant Digimon are well-behaved.

Mimi Tachikawa: While Mimi can still be absent-minded, Noah very much loves her honesty. So much so that he tends to go to her for a second opinion when he or Reflectmon’s Partner comes up with a plan.

Takeru Takaishi: Noah sees him as a living solace. At times, Noah would come to him when he felt upset. And when Noah would blame himself for something, his friends sent him Takeru’s way. “He really is a saving grace” Noah’d always say.

Heads up, I’m going to refer to the death of queer characters here.

So the way John talks about grief and the fact that he wrote an entire essay about grieving... I think this is something very personal to him, that he has lost someone he loved very much. It can’t be his parents, they’re still alive, and there’s never been any suggestion that something happened such as him and Sarah previously losing a child or anything like that. It could be another blood relation but I would be inclined to think this was someone he lost years ago and therefore it can’t have been a blood relation because I think either he or Sarah would have suggested that person’s name as a possible name for their child if he’d lost a relation he was really close to, like a sibling or grandparent. So what if it was a romantic partner who died, someone before Sarah (and before he went to university, which would fit with maybe why he wanted to write about grief perhaps)? And not to be all angsty and go too far down the Tragic Queer route but remember how he acts towards Noah later in Let Us Prey, a young man, a fairly young student still, grieving for the man he loves? 

I still feel like he has very strong empathy towards Noah, not only because Noah is gay but also because Noah is grieving for someone, a man, he loves and is doing so while he’s very young still. I can so easily believe John, when he was young, also had a boyfriend and that boyfriend died, and him studying human grief like that was almost a way for him to try to cope with his own grief and do so in particular in a time where being gay or bisexual was not criminalised and was gaining wider acceptance but when it was still a very difficult time to be queer even so and where maybe, even more than in the modern day, he probably didn’t feel able to grieve more openly for a male lover (especially when I still think it also fits so well that John may have initially experienced some homophobia/biphobia from within his own family, which created a degree of distance from them). 

Oh fuck. My friend. Allow me to introduce you to the actual love of my life, my son and stars (pun intended), my unabashed self insert (kinda) - 

Noah Evans. 

- 15 y.o., gay af, short af, half white half Venezuelan, curly hair and thick glasses, a true bean

Noah’s mom committed suicide when he was five years old, which completely wrecked his already fragile father. The two moved in with Noah’s dad’s older sister and her husband and their daughter, who was only two at the time. 

This incredibly traumatic incident early on has left Noah with some unusual quirks… most notably an obsession with death. He’s wickedly smart, especially with math and statistics. Noah memorizes facts and probabilities as a coping mechanism. (Ofc he wouldn’t call it that) He especially likes to memorize names and the amounts of people that have said names, and facts about suicide and death in general. 

Noah spends probably 80% of his time thinking about death. 

He has burgeoning signs of borderline personality disorder/type two bipolar disorder (not saying they’re the same thing - more as in I haven’t cemented his actual diagnoses) which is only made more difficult by his PTSD.

Despite this, Noah seems rather well adjusted. He a high school senior (graduating two years ahead), is very involved in his school’s GSA, and has a healthy relationship with his best friend, Daffodil Elizabeth Summers, or Liz for short. (Her parents are major hippies and I love her so much.) He gets along well with his aunt and uncle and has a sibling-like relationship with his cousin Stella. Noah internalizes most of his issues, so although he comes across a little quiet and kind of intense/standoffish, you wouldn’t peg him as troubled. 

Noah’s dad is incredibly flighty and unstable. For Noah’s entire life he’s been leaving for months at a time, letting his sister and brother-in-law take care of his son. They day after Noah’s 14th birthday his dad took a “business trip” and hasn’t been seen since - no cards, no letters, no sign of life except for a monthly check being deposited in Noah’s aunt’s checking account labeled “Child Support.” Noah asks if there is any mail from his father every day, and there never is. He tries to pretend that this is not killing him. 

Entire Alastair Everrett. Alastair transfers into their school midyear. He’s rich, he’s outgoing, he’s funny, he’s charismatic, he’s weird but he seems proud of it. They meet at a GSA meeting, and while sparks don’t fly, they are amiable towards each other. 

Liz, ever the mom friend, both wants to help Alastair as the new kid and wants Noah to increase his social circle, so she adopts him into their small friend group (which is Noah, Liz, and Liz’s SO - Cade). Noah and Alastair start to develop feelings for each other (because duh)

But Alastair is weird. He’s never really allowed to go out any where. He has a car but has to ride the bus. His mom is really nice, but he’s always complaining about her. And he’s really *really* reckless. 

I kind of got off track in to plot things oops lol.
