Choosing hair color for yourself is all about you; your personal preference, your skin tone, and your style or fashion. The most important key is finding a shade that complements your skin. If you are very fair with pink undertone, an ashy or cool toned color may not be the best because it will accentuate the red in your skin. You would probably be better with a neutral to warm based color, such as a golden blond or copper brunette, to bring warmth to your skin without making you look sunburnt. If you are of dark complexion with a lot of yellow/orange undertones, you will want to stay away from red or orange toned hair colors because they will blend too much with your skin making you look washed out.
Once you and your colorist have found that perfect shade for your skin, now you can add to it. If you're a fan of the ombre, or traditional highlights, this would be the time to talk about dimensional colors. The most natural looking hair color has several (4 or more) different shades playing throughout it. This is usually achieved with a combination of high and low-lights. If you're going with a neutral dark brown you can play it up with subtle caramel highlights and maroon (or a dark mahogany) low-lights. If you're doing a strawberry blonde, you can add a unique twist with a peach-toned ombre. If you are into more funky or dramatic colors, consider getting balayage color of a fantasy shade such as blue, green, pink, or purple. Consider that with today's well developed dyes any of these fantasy shades can be tweaked to your favorite shade, whether it be baby blue, mint green, coral, lavender, turquoise, lilac, or magenta.
