journalism v. non-journalism
Not journalism: Bella Hadid’s selfie on Instagram
Journalism: Vogue’s 73 Questions with Bella Hadid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGsjNOOaRXg
Why: While both these pieces seem fairly vapid, the Vogue piece uses investigative methods to cover celebrity information that has an interested audience. Bella’s post, though widely spread in media, doesn’t share any information or involve any journalistic methods.
Journalism: An article reviewing a car https://www.motortrend.com/cars/honda/ridgeline/2019/2019-honda-ridgeline-awd-black-edition-first-test-review/
Not Journalism: An ad for a car https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=COaddZFlHXPe0JIOX_gTbubHgD_jzkf5Uh_zL7J0Is5AfEAEgAGDJxqmLwKTYD4IBF2NhLXB1Yi02MjE5ODExNzQ3MDQ5MzcxoAGmwaTgA6gDBKoE0QFP0Aa8qmrvvpNComGme_PHYsRzmsuguUmqoY-Iff7r5tUGMT8vjfp3hMmi3UNkTC4wiL6AIg17PXZhsZvHQuVvRepJjM37mWcjkvVOPbwFTMUAyjRc91LJhWN0iy_knJxzVoTpiNwLBPxw_fdmCWpDFvTW5nx5-2x1bJmYZIxMhqTx-Gfp3d2WNnfcsCFip_igsaglC9hi_sQvbOjQNq3xQS3bfAk8UDu2_BJmaqE7yvHcerN2QAUfMKUWHATJl1vP0LX4VmxQ3mrZ2NXV_XFbf5IFDAgSMKWgrtOGrMTkYaAGGoAHtoGAcYgHAZAHAqgHqNIbqAfZyxuoB8_MG6gHjM0bqAfVzhuoB4HGG6gHmM4bqAerxRuoB97OG5IIC1lja1JZR3Bya0NV0ggECAAQArEJ-YhOBJh11kHICRe4E-gBsBQD&num=1&cid=CAESDuD22d6E6WszBlD2-8_M&sig=AOD64_0bWhKtM7rnQr4Ttpc9H4vWIz7KjA&adurl=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DYckRYGprkCU&ctype=21&video_id=YckRYGprkCU&client=ca-pub-6219811747049371
Why: Both discuss similar products, but the ad simply tells the consumer why they should buy the product and is from a clearly biased standpoint. The article investigates both positive and negative aspects of the product and gives a more honest review - more work is done about why the product may be worth purchasing.
Not Journalism: https://www.reddit.com/r/alcohol/comments/2i6pls/first_drink_recommendations/ A Reddit thread recommending alcoholic drinks for someone’s first time drinking
Journalism: Man Repeller article interviewing New York City bartenders https://www.manrepeller.com/2019/01/new-york-bartenders-on-judging-your-drink-order.html
Why: The article about bartenders involves journalistic questioning and scouting of people of interest to readers. It discusses cultural norms at bars and investigates a topic with a tone of neutrality. The Reddit article only asks for biased recommendations, as if in a conversation, and they are given through the forum. Though the person asking the question could be considered to have journalistic intent, the tone of their question is sheerly personal and doesn’t seem to be used for the gathering of information that doesn’t just involve their experience. This is more of a discussion, not for journalistic purposes.
