Why: Both discuss similar products, but the ad simply tells the consumer why they should buy the product and is from a clearly biased standpoint. The article investigates both positive and negative aspects of the product and gives a more honest review - more work is done about why the product may be worth purchasing.

Why: The site for Daily Mail is busy, chaotic, difficult to navigate, and includes heavy ads on the home page. The site is overwhelming upon first glance, and extremely busy. Vestoj utilizes good design on their site with minimal color scheme and layout, simple and obvious section headers, and one article displayed on the front page.

Why: Fashion Nova is a prime example of fast fashion - the company quickly churns out knock-off designer items that are poorly and unethically made. It is easy to tell that the design and craftsmanship are poor. Everlane, on the other hand, uses and advertises sustainable methods to create garments that are meant to last and be worn over longer periods of time. The fabrics and craftsmanship are hardier and better thought out. The difference is evident in both cost of items, look, and feel.

Why: Wayfair and Ikea have similar models in which the buyer is given pieces and puts furniture together. While Ikea attempts to utilize simplicity in their design, giving users as few parts and pieces as possible, Wayfair often makes things complicated and many pieces are missing in packages. In addition, Ikea uses standard aesthetics that are simple and liked by a wide array of people, while Wayfair’s designs are often less tasteful.

Street Harassment and Signs Against It

 “I’m wearing this skirt because I like it, not because I want you to like what you see,” said 23 year old, Amanda Van Poznak. Growing up in a suburban area of North New Jersey, Amanda seldom experienced street harassment. Unfortunately, she soon realized that her lack of exposure was not because it was not occurring, but rather because driving is the more opted means of transportation in her hometown. If there were construction workers driving by as she walked into a store she recalls that they may have beeped, but it seemed almost comical to her. That was until she realized how much of a pressing issue street harassment is when she moved to New York City in 2011.

Amanda will be graduating from LIM College this May and throughout her fours years at the institution she has lived in multiple neighborhoods of Manhattan and Brooklyn.  From the East Village, to Midtown, to the Upper East Side, to Bushwick, Amanda has experienced her fare share of harassment in these areas as well as others. While walking through the West Village at around 1 p.m. last Saturday Amanda notes that a man was starring at her and she felt as though he was peering into her soul. He then begin to get closer and she thought he might have a question, but he simply whispered, almost in her ear, “Beautiful, oh my god.” Out of context this remark may seem like a compliment, but Van Poznak said that it gave her the chills in the way that her skin was crawling and she felt uneasy. “Not only was it his words, but it was that he was physically getting into my space,” said Amanda.

Being that she goes to a fashion oriented school, Van Poznak experiments with her style. This experimentation is meant to draw attention, but it has lead to unwarranted, uncomfortable situations. “I want to express myself, but walking down the street I feel like I should wear a bed sheet and cover every part of my body except my eyes so I can see where I am going…this so disheartening because while this may be an extreme comparison, the way that the male gaze degrades women is relatable to the way women are viewed in reserved countries that do actually force them to cover themselves because of the control that males have,” said Amanda.

 Despite making women extremely uncomfortable, which is how Amanda notes she felt following Saturday’s encounter, Van Poznak brings up another aspect of street harassment and how it is detrimental to women’s self-worth and self-expression. Women should not be made to feel like they have to hide in order to avoid this unwanted attention and Amanda feels strongly about being able to stand up against this.

Social Media and Street Harassment

 Whistles, catcalls, and sexist comments.  If you have ever been in a public place, especially a large urban setting such as New York City, you have definitely heard at least one if not all of these. Walking down city streets you are never alone, but if you are a woman, you are also rarely left alone.  Street harassment has been an issue for many years, but thankfully with the modern technology people are able to make a stand against it. Signs and posters and things of that nature have been sprouting up in urban cities, namely in New York.  These “movements” can now be advertised and spread via social media postings.  Social media allows others to join in and share their stories.  It also allows those who were previously hesitant or without an outlet, to share their street harassment stories and bring awareness to the issue.

 One way that this issue is being broadcasted is through the Hashtag #WhatMySHSaid. This Hashtag is gaining attention on Instagram and Twitter and allowing girls to share their stories. In order to allow those who do not wish to speak out directly to remain anonymous, any people are accepting these messages and posting them on their own accounts.  According to girlsspeak.org, one California Teen in particular, Chloe Parker, is allowing other girls and women to send her a picture of them with their age, location, and name (first and last or just first if they wish to be unidentified), to direct message her their stories so that she can post them to her and accumulate these incidents. Chloe and anyone who is sharing stories with this Hashtag that is easy to find and use as social media is so prevalent, is allowing women to know that they not alone in this fight to walk down the street in peace.

 Also, some deep issues have spawned from the sharing of these stories. The communications that are linked to this Hashtag are extremely moving and informative. All examples portray how egregiously wrong street harassment is and show their lasting effect, but they have also opened a can of worms as legality issues have come into play. Young girls are not off limits to street harassers. The Hashtag #WhatMySHSaid has been used by not only harassed women, but also taunted minors as well.

 In the case of minors reporting the taunting they received, the sexual harassment of a minor becomes another issue. This is frightening and the severity went unnoticed until social media allowed this mass sharing. Now, not only are people knowing that they are not alone and cane make a difference, but the possible protection of women and girls will be heightened because of the new world that technology has created.

  As a promotional tool social media has changed marketing and advertising in multiple facets of life.  This simple and easy sharing is also given courage to those who may have been weary of speaking out in person as well as letting anyone affected, or potentially affected, know that they are not alone. Movements against street harassment are now able to gain traction as social media creates a following and people are becoming aware of what they can do to prevent and hopefully stop street harassment instead of it being an unavoidable aspect of walking down the street as a female.

Thursday March 12th, well known Danish DJ, Morten Breum, emptied out LAVO nightclub in New York City and the supporting DJ, Kevin Courtois, saved the night. The club was packed by midnight with a lot of reservations and people were already dancing on the tables before Morten came on. Kevin started out the night with a strong opening that excited the crowd and would normally make things easier for the headlining DJ. However, Morten started his set at 1 a.m. with very hard EDM that was too intense for the crowd. The room was vibrating because of the sound, which moved people off of the dance floor. It was as if he thought the trendy upscale nightclub was a music festival full of people on drugs wanting to get lost in trippy music. He wasn't prepared for the venue and didn't switch the music when it was obvious that he was killing what started off to be a successful night. Morten played until around 3 a.m. and Kevin came back on to close the night. He immediately played commercial club music and managed to get people back on the dance floor. The crowd was excited again, but unfortunately there weren't enough people still there to keep the night going on. LAVO nightclub usually closes after 4 a.m. but the night ended at 3:30 a.m.
