For three years in a row now, the small town of Taos, New Mexico is hosting an arts and prayer festival for and by young people. Regeneration Festival was founded by Lyla Johnston (Diné/Cheyenne) after four young adults in her community attempted suicide in the span of one month. Johnston, a 23 year-old poet and musician, lost many of her friends while growing up in Taos to homicide, suicide and overdose, a problem that continues to plague her people. This year the festival has expanded to become an international instrument of social change with sister celebrations occurring in India, Italy, Mexico and other cities and towns of the United States.

The festival, originally dubbed “Taos Celebration of the Young,” was initially intended to be a small Lakota pipe ceremony with concerned citizens of the community praying for the younger generation. “Suicide, violence and addiction, these are all spiritual issues and call for a spiritual solution,” says Johnston. However, during the planning process it began to snowball into a four-day celebration that included a “Run for the Young,” an electronic dance party, four Lakota sweat lodges, Kirtan chants for the young, moments of silence in the town’s churches, a workshop day with over 50 classes offered to young people and a final bash including a youth concert, art exhibition and feast. Today the festival is designed to be “half prayer and half party.”

The festival continues to be four days long to honor each other the four sacred directions. “While all spiritual ways of life are honored and respected through this festival, I chose the Lakota medicine wheel to provide the framework for the celebration because it portrays all four colors, all four races of the world in one hoop. It is clear that the red, black, white and yellow people of the world must come together as one to really give the future generations of the world what they deserve.”

Johnston had herself experienced hardship with drug addiction and depression. Her saving grace was art and the Creator who helped her climb out of that darkness and into sobriety and health. Expressing herself through spoken word poetry and music helped her get through those painful and confusing teenage years and build her self esteem. As such, she designed the festival to give young people plenty of opportunities to express themselves and be heard. While there are other epicenters of the festival, not all are for the full four days. Some are participating in the international day of prayer for the next seven generations on September 1st. BULLET will also star First Nations actress Tinsel Korey.

Aboriginal singer Crystal Shawanda can now add a JUNO award to her list of major achievements. Shawanda took home the Aboriginal Album of the Year award, which was sponsored by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for her song "Just Like You". Her other major achievements include being named Canadian Country Music Association’s Female Artist of the Year and her 2008 debut album Dawn of a New Day which was considered Billboard's highest charting album by a Native American in history, selling 400,000 copies.
