A little bit regarding the E.I. situation in Canada amid the COVI-19 Virus...
600 hours of work in a span of 52 weeks that contributed to E.I. Benefits whether through employer or self-employment*
has closed for the foreseeable future
have self-isolating/are in quarantine
Register for Sickness Benefits. Do NOT worry about any of the paperwork right now. Just register online, and that will get taken care of.
*Self-employed folk who did NOT contribute to E.I. Benefits are currently to rely on provincial funding only. This also goes for people who have worked under the table.
Does the 600 hour requirement have to be at the same job?
No. It is 600 hours worked in 12 months, period. The CRA** tracks our work history for a ten year period and reports to Services Canada when information is requested. Employers must report who they have on staff so benefits are paid out as efficiently as possible.
You do not have to send ROE's unless your employer gives you a paper copy. If they did not give you a paper copy, it means they sent it electronically.
**Going to admit this is only my understanding of what I noticed when signing forms and dealing with E.I. in the past. I think what I wrote was the answer I got when I asked, but if someone has proof I am wrong, please let me know.
What if we don't get a paper copy and the ROE has not been sent yet?
Don't worry about it. Services Canada will deal with that for the time being.
What if I am not sick? Don't I need a doctors note to be on sick benefits?
Because COVID-19 has been upgraded by WHO to the level it has, no records are required at this time. The only thing they care about is you registering asap. This includes the sick, quarantined, self-isolated, and those with temporary job loss who still have a job after work starts up again.
If you only meet the hour limit and quit your job or were fired, go through regular benefits.
What if I need the money immediately because I am sick/quarantined?
