What Living Near the Shore Taught Me About Pruning a Few Weeks Off From My Inland Friends
I have a sister-in-law about twenty minutes inland from me, and every year we compare notes on our yards like it's a running competition. Her crocuses come up, mine are still asleep. Her maple leafs out, mine is a week behind. For years I assumed my trees were just slower or my soil was worse. Turns out it's a lot simpler than that: living close to the water changes the whole seasonal clock, and nobody tells you that when you move to a coastal town.
The gap is bigger than I expected
I started actually paying attention to this a couple springs ago, after I pruned a young dogwood on what I thought was the right late-winter schedule, only to find out from a neighbor who does landscaping on the side that I'd cut it a solid two to three weeks earlier than her own trees, a few miles further from the water, were ready for. The water moderates temperature swings in both directions. Why this actually matters for pruning
Most of what I'd read about pruning timing was written generically, "prune in late winter before buds break," without accounting for the fact that "late winter" on my block and "late winter" twenty minutes inland are not the same three or four weeks. If I go strictly off a calendar date shared by a friend further inland, I'm either pruning too early relative to my own trees' actual dormancy, or too late, depending on which direction the guidance skews.
What's worked better for me is watching my own trees directly rather than trusting a shared date. Bud swelling, not the calendar, is what actually tells me when the safe window is closing for a given tree.

Checking the actual water temperature explained a lot
Once I started digging into why this happens, I found NOAA keeps public buoy and tide station data that tracks coastal water temperature in near real time. NOAA Tides and Currents has a station not too far from us, and comparing the water temperature trend against the air temperature trend inland made the lag click for me in a way that just "it's colder by the shore" hadn't. The ocean is a massive, slow-moving heat sink. It takes months to warm up in spring and months to cool down in fall, and the air right along the coast gets dragged along with whatever the water is doing far more than air twenty minutes inland does.
This is technically called a coastal microclimate effect, and it is a well documented phenomenon, not something specific to our particular stretch of shoreline. Anywhere you get a large body of water next to inland terrain, you get some version of this lag, just at different intensities depending on the specific geography.
Why I stopped trusting shared calendars entirely
Once I understood the mechanism, I stopped trying to sync my yard's schedule to my sister-in-law's, or to any generic date I found online. Now I just watch my own trees. It sounds obvious written out like that, but for a couple of years I genuinely thought I was doing something wrong because my trees were "behind." They weren't behind. They were exactly on schedule for where they actually are, which is a few hundred yards from saltwater, not twenty minutes inland.

That side-by-side comparison, on trees in my own yard, is what convinced me the lag was real and not just an excuse for procrastinating on yard work, which is honestly what I assumed at first.
It also made me realize how much generic advice assumes a kind of "average" location that doesn't really exist anywhere specific. A statewide pruning calendar has to split the difference between the coldest inland pockets and the mildest coastal edges of the state, which means it is probably slightly wrong for almost everyone, just in different directions depending on where you actually live.

The older folks on my street just say "we're always a few weeks behind the towns further in," without necessarily knowing it's about ocean heat capacity specifically. They're right, they just arrived at the same conclusion from decades of watching their own yards rather than from reading about tide station data.

My sister-in-law and I still compare notes every spring. We just stopped assuming we should be on the same schedule. If anything, comparing notes across the coastal-to-inland gap has made both of us better at reading our own yards, since it forced us to stop leaning on each other's timing and start watching our own trees instead.
