(English version below) I NITRÌTONO sono i creatori di un Post Metal/Noise-core molto potente. Capaci come pochi altri nel dipingere arazzi musicali che ti trasportano in un viaggio inquieto, claustrofobico, travagliato e inesorabile verso l'abisso più profondo, nel loro nuovo album "Cecità", danno voce al verbo del Post-Metal che trova qui nuova vita, spaziando tra atmosfere dilatate e raffinate e distorsioni profonde e taglienti, in un album che ti invita a seguirli su sentieri precisi percorsi da band come Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Swans, Melvins , Zu, Pellican. Luca e Siro ci parlano del loro mondo, della loro creatura e di quanto si cela dietro "Cecità".

NITRITONO è un duo artefice di quello che possiamo definire un potentissimo mix di Post Metal e Noise-core attivi ormai da una decina d'anni. Ci vuoi presentare la band ed il progetto che state portando avanti?

Nitritono nasce come duo strumentale più di dieci anni fa dall'incontro tra me, Luca Lavernicocca e Siro Giri. L'idea sin da subito era quella di creare un progetto che cercasse di non incasellarci eccessivamente in un genere, ma di cercare di portare avanti un discorso coerente, buttando in pentola ciò che abbiamo ritenuto via via più apprezzabile. All'inizio eravamo più improntati sulla scia noise in stile Fantomas, per poi virare sempre più verso atmosfere Post Metal con qualche sezione psichedelica per respirare.

Una curiosità personale: perché questo nome e cosa rappresenta per voi?

Il nome è l'unione di due parole: nitrito e tritono. La prima è riferita al verso del cavallo, mentre la seconda è il cosiddetto "diabolus in musica". Nell'antichità sovrapporre due note ad una distanza di quarta eccedente (per esempio fa e si), ossia formare un trìtono, era proibito per la musica sacra perché il suono che ne risultava era talmente dissonante da essere considerato demoniaco. Ah, l'accento è Nitrìtono!

Il nuovo album della band si intitola "Cecità" ed uscirà il prossimo aprile in formato digipakCD, LP e digitale. Senza ombra di dubbio è il lavoro più completo e maturo realizzato finora. Ce ne vuoi parlare più in dettaglio soprattutto in termini musicali?

Il nostro nuovo disco è un po' la sintesi di quello che è stato il nostro percorso di più di dieci anni assieme, in questo lavoro abbiamo cercato di dare una forma più strutturata e coerente al linguaggio che avevamo iniziato a stilare in precedenza. Dal punto di vista compositivo, abbiamo lavorato come abbiamo sempre fatto; ossia un lungo periodo di grandi jam session con registratore a portata di mano, poi da lì abbiamo selezionato le idee che ci sono sembrate più convincenti e che avessero una buona possibilità di evolvere in brano definitivo. Forse la maggior differenza rispetto ai precedenti lavori sta proprio in questo ultimo passaggio, ossia negli arrangiamenti dei brani. Dall'idea primordiale e improvvisata, abbiamo lavorato ad arrivare ad avere brani strutturati con maggiore esperienza e consapevolezza, cercando di togliere le sezioni superflue (forse uno degli aspetti più delicati) o costruire collegamenti tra le varie parti del brano.

Cecità è il titolo del romanzo dello scrittore portoghese José Saramago e tratta del tema dell'indifferenza nella società contemporanea. Quanto vi ha influenzato questo lavoro e come possiamo ritrovarlo all'interno dell'album?

I brani del nuovo disco sono nati tutti da jam session nel periodo immediatamente successivo al lockdown del 2020. Il quel periodo, oltre ovviamente alla gran voglia di tornare a suonare assieme e creare nuovo materiale, avevamo un gran senso di insofferenza per le derive complottiste pseudo-fasciste che poco a poco erano emerse nei mesi precedenti. Dal cerchio umano iniziale di amore e solidarietà si è passati ad un clima di cinico egoismo quotidiano, in un silente crescendo. Tutto questo che ha continuato a protrarsi e riteniamo si stia propagando ancora oggi stesso ci ha portato a intitolare il nostro disco prendendo a prestito il romanzo di Saramago come parallelo al presente che stiamo vivendo.

Ascoltando l'album si percepisce in pieno la sensazione di essere in una sorta di vortice sonoro estremamente violento in alcuni tratti, in altri il tutto si fa minimal ma resta la sensazione di inquietudine per un lavoro estremamente viscerale. Cosa rappresenta per voi questo lavoro ormai a oltre 10 anni dalla nascita del progetto?

Per noi questo lavoro rappresenta davvero un punto di arrivo. Dopo più di 10 anni passati a suonare assieme, in realtà avevamo un po' di timore di aver "esaurito" un po' le idee, di rischiare di diventare stantii e ripetitivi. In questo lavoro invece abbiamo davvero scoperto un linguaggio ancora diverso, basato su quello che siamo noi, ma evoluto e ragionato nelle scelte compositive e strutturali dei brani. Non nascondiamo di essere davvero soddisfatti del risultato, anche grazie alle magiche mani di Dano (Danilo Battocchio) che è riuscito a comprendere il progetto a fondo e a fare registrazioni e mix con una competenza che ci ha lasciato a bocca aperta. Diciamo che arrivati al terzo disco, finalmente abbiamo un prodotto che suona come avevamo in testa prima di registrarlo. Detto questo non lo vediamo come un traguardo definitivo, anzi ricominceremo a fare jam e a sperimentare linguaggi diversi fino a che questa attività ci farà sentire vivi.

Nel descrivere il vostro progetto ho usato come termini di paragone gruppi del calibro di Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Swans, Melvins, Zu, Pelican. Vi ci ritrovate? Cosa hanno in comune con voi queste bands?

Sono band che adoriamo e che sono state proprio il punto di riferimento per far partire e proseguire il progetto. Leggere questo accostamento ci riempie davvero di gioia (e anche un po' di orgoglio dai!).

Un aspetto molto interessante del vostro progetto è l'aspetto live dove spesso ricorrete ad altre forme d'arte come la danza o la pittura. È un qualcosa che continuerete a fare e soprattutto qual è il senso profondo di queste arti visive legate alla vostra musica?

Da sempre abbiamo visto la collaborazione tra diverse forme di arte come un arricchimento. Mettere assieme forze, energie e linguaggi artistici porta ad un ampliamento su tutti i fronti dell'esperienza artistica e al tempo stesso offre la possibilità di ampliare il proprio pubblico. L'ultima nostra collaborazione è nata dall'idea di Giulia che ha ideato una performance artistica che come tema di fondo aveva il valore trascendentale degli spazi naturali e montani. Il nostro precedente disco "Eremo" era perfettamente inserito in questa direzione, essendo interamente dedicato a luoghi naturali in cui ci siamo "persi", in cui abbiamo avuto la sensazione di trovarci, appunto, in un Eremo; lontani dal quotidiano, dalle pressioni e dal tempo. Da questa passione comune è nata l'idea di convogliare le energie in un progetto che portasse la nostra musica ad un piano emotivo nuovo; non musica "pura", ma una coreografia che immergeva la ballerina e il pubblico in un unico flusso sonoro.

NITRITONO è per me un trip verso un abisso dissonante senza fondo. Dove ci porterà questo viaggio?

È bellissimo vedere come la nostra musica possa trasmettere sensazioni forti come appunto "un trip dissonante senza fondo" perché per noi l'aspetto emotivo è il fulcro di tutta l’esperienza musicale. Per noi Nitritono significa valvola di sfogo, un antro all'interno delle nostre settimane in cui possiamo respirare, in cui possiamo tirar fuori il disagio, le ansie, le tensioni che accumuliamo nel nostro vivere quotidiano. È un'esperienza estremamente catartica in cui escludiamo qualunque forma di filtro, in cui l'abisso è il fine assoluto per un nuovo inizio. Sul dove porterà il viaggio, crediamo che ogni viaggiatore troverà la propria meta, strutturando il proprio percorso passo a passo, dissonanza dopo dissonaza.

Luca and Siro talk about their world, their creature and what is behind " Cecità".

NITRITONO is a duo who creates a very powerful mix of Post Metal and Noise-core active for about ten years now. Do you want to introduce us to the band and the project?

Nitritono was born as an instrumental duo more than ten years ago from the meeting between me, Luca Lavernicocca and Siro Giri. The idea right from the start was to create a project that tried not to pigeonhole us excessively into one genre, but to try to carry forward a coherent discussion, throwing into the pot what we gradually found more appreciable. At the beginning we were more focused on the Fantomas-style noise trail, and then we increasingly veered towards post-metal atmospheres with some psychedelic sections to breathe.

A personal curiosity: why this name and what does it represent for you?

The name is the union of two words: neigh and tritone. The first refers to the sound of the horse, while the second is the so-called "diabolus in musica". In ancient times, superimposing two notes at a distance of an excess of a fourth, i.e. forming a tritone, was forbidden for sacred music because the resulting sound was so dissonant as to be considered demonic. Ah, the accent is neighing!

The band's new album is titled "Blindness" and will be released next April in digipak, LP and digital formats. Without a shadow of a doubt it is the most complete and mature work created so far. Would you like to talk about it in more detail, especially in musical terms?

Our new album is a bit of a synthesis of our journey together for more than ten years. In this work we tried to give a more structured and coherent form to the language we had started to draw up previously. From a compositional point of view, we worked as we always have; that is, a long period of great jam sessions with recorders at hand, then from there we selected the ideas that seem most convincing to us and that have a good chance of evolving into a definitive song. Perhaps the biggest difference compared to previous works lies precisely in this last step, i.e. in the arrangements of the songs. From the primordial and improvised idea, we worked to arrive at structured songs with greater experience and awareness, trying to remove superfluous sections (perhaps one of the most delicate aspects) or build connections between the various parts of the song.

Blindness is the title of the novel by the Portuguese writer José Saramago and deals with the theme of indifference in contemporary society. How much did this work influence you and how can we find it on the album?

The songs on the new album were all born from jam sessions in the period immediately following the 2020 lockdown. In that period, in addition obviously to the great desire to return to playing together and create new material, we had a great sense of intolerance for the pseudo-conspiracy drifts -fascists who had gradually emerged in the previous months. From the initial human circle of love and solidarity we have moved on to a climate of cynical daily selfishness, in a silent crescendo. All this which has continued to continue and we believe is still propagating today has led us to title our album by borrowing Saramago's novel as a parallel to the present we are experiencing.

Listening to the album you can fully perceive the sensation of being in a sort of sonic vortex that is extremely violent in some parts, in others everything becomes minimal but the feeling of restlessness remains for an extremely visceral work. What does this work represent for you now more than 10 years after the birth of the project?

For us this work truly represents a point of arrival. After more than 10 years spent playing together, we were actually a bit afraid of having "run out" of ideas a bit, of risking becoming stale and repetitive. In this work, however, we have truly discovered an even different language, based on what we are, but evolved and reasoned in the compositional and structural choices of the songs. We don't hide the fact that we are really satisfied with the result, also thanks to the magical hands of Dano (Danilo Battocchio) who managed to understand the project thoroughly and make recordings and mixes with a skill that left us speechless. Let's say that when we reach the third album, we finally have a product that sounds like what we had in mind before recording it. Having said this, we don't see it as a definitive goal, on the contrary we will start jamming again and experimenting with different languages ​​until this activity makes us feel alive.

When describing your project I used groups of the caliber of Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Swans, Melvins, Zu, Pelican as terms of comparison. Will you meet again? What do these bands have in common with you?

They are bands that we adore and who were precisely the point of reference for starting and continuing the project. Reading this combination really fills us with joy (and even a little pride come on!)

A very interesting aspect of your project is the live aspect where you often resort to other art forms such as dance or painting. Is this something you will continue to do and above all what is the profound meaning of these visual arts linked to your music?

We have always seen the collaboration between different forms of art as an enrichment. Bringing together strengths, energies and artistic languages ​​leads to an expansion on all fronts of the artistic experience and at the same time offers the possibility of broadening one's audience. Our latest collaboration was born from the idea of ​​Giulia who created an artistic performance whose underlying theme had the transcendental value of natural and mountain spaces. Our previous album "Eremo" was perfectly placed in this direction, being entirely dedicated to natural places in which we got "lost", where we had the sensation of finding ourselves, in fact, in a Hermitage; far from everyday life, pressure and time. From this common passion was born the idea of ​​channeling energies into a project that would bring our music to a new emotional level; not "pure" music, but a choreography that immersed the dancer and the audience in a single sound flow.

NITRITONO is for me a trip towards a bottomless dissonant abyss. Where will this journey take us?

It's beautiful to see how our music can convey strong sensations such as "a bottomless dissonant trip" because for us the emotional aspect is the fulcrum of the entire musical experience. For us Nitritono means a relief valve, a cave within our weeks in which we can breathe, in which we can bring out the discomfort, anxieties and tensions that we accumulate in our daily lives. It is an extremely cathartic experience in which we exclude any form of filter, in which the abyss is the absolute goal for a new beginning. As to where the journey will lead, we believe that every traveler will find their own destination, structuring their path step by step, dissonance after dissonance.
