The word was popularized on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter. It is derived from “Plebeians” from ancient Rome, which is associated with those in lower class. The Chinese version屌丝 is used for self-mocking by people from a lower social class, especially those who were born during the 80s and 90s. People who identify themselves as Diao Si tend to think they have no achievements in any aspect of life. It’s a reflection of discontent in the gap between the rich and the poor.
