Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica has been generally regarded as one of the most important anime of the last decade. In particular, Madoka was praised for its deep plot and it’s exploration of the darker sides of the magical girl genre. But while Madoka is the best known dark magical girl show, it’s far from the first, and the shows that helped pave the way for Madoka deserve recognition. Here are a few of those shows which Ninapedia discussed in her panel Before Madoka: Deep Dark Magical Girl Series & Moments.

Cutie Honey: This show as the first magical girl anime aimed at adult audiences. But the adult nature of this show goes deeper than the level of violence and sexualization one should expect from a creation of Go Nagai (who also made Devilman). The plot to Cutie Honey is dark, starting with a parental death and only getting darker from there.

Magic Knight Rayearth: This show attempted something interesting: blending shojo anime with shonen anime. This is a show about magical girls in a high fantasy setting who fight by transforming into mecha. But the show also had a number of dark plot twists, and explored the idea that being the chosen one can be a curse, not a blessing, an idea that would be central to the plot of Madoka. 

Revolutionary Girl Utena: While Cutie Honey and MKR are darker versions of a straightforward magical girl anime, Revolutionary Girl Utena is a deconstruction of the genre. This show explores the tropes typical of the genre for every bit of darkness and unfortunate implication that are typically ignored. The result is a show full of deep psychological analysis and symbolic visuals. Also, the movie has a character transform into a car, which is something.

Princess Tutu: This is a show about a duck that turns into a girl that turns into a magical girl who does ballet. How could that be dark? By setting it in a world heavily inspired by gothic literature and then deconstructing every trope that goes along with magic girl and classical literature. But despite being a very thematically dark show, it’s also a show with moments of awesome great enough to match most shonen anime.

Lyrical Nanoha: This show as a hit in Japan when it came out, kicking off the current trend of magical girl shows aimed at adult audiences. This show is noteworthy for it’s brilliant battle sequences and a very dark plot twist.

Unfortunately, only Princess Tutu (Hidive and Amazon) and Lyrical Nanoha (Amazon) are currently available for legal streaming. But if you want to check the other shows out, odds are you can find them in our dealer’s room.

Ilonaquafina Divina Zamolodchikova, or Ilona, is a chotic good high elf bard drag queen. thats really all u need to know about her lmaoo. You dont try to cheat her (ask trevor about this hes still mad at me about it) or give her cheap watered down alcohol

She also appears in Attitudes and Altitude, as a manananggal, which @prismaticreverie suggested and i love it bc whats the best way to snatch your waist and have a super tight corset? separating your torso from your legs lmaoo. Here she emcees the weekly show at The Junkyard, an 18+ lgbt club, as well as co-owns Fetch Quest Cafe, a tabletop gaming boba cafe with her bestie, my OTHER dnd character:

Bubbles!

Bubbles is a water genasi monk, tall and powerful. She’s currently out on a test, basically absorbing the world culture and finding her purpose (as well as reconnecting with her parents.) The campaign she’d in is dm’ed by @sassking-trevor

This is bubbles making a lovely salad with enna, @prismaticreverie‘s character. This happened in story, in case you were wondering the kinds of shenanigans Bubbles gets up to.

Her cameo in Attitudes and Altitude is as Sabine Ammerman, Ilonas’ long-time best friend, co-owner of Fetch Quest cafe, and one of Mimis’ moms

I actually really want to try to host a panel at Anime Expo in L.A.! The applications aren’t up yet and I don’t know if I’ll be able to go just yet but I have plans on trying! Ideally I’ll be doing Fight Like a Girl cause that one is always my most popular but I have plans to submit all three.

This being said, I have toyed with the idea of a Patreon or Youtube channel where I do just videos of my panels along with some additional content. I’m just never sure if it’s something people would be interested in? It’s a big investment and I don’t want to put too much into it if it’s not going to benefit a lot of folks.
