@nileguardâ sent:Â â The ugly and the stupid have the best of it in this world. â (For Nicky :3)
Nicky's lean frame is curled almost delicately in a cafe chair, the very image of repose with one bare ankle propped on his opposite knee. He cradles an espresso in his hand, long fingers dwarfing the cup, seeming unbothered by the scalding heat of the ceramic. From behind borrowed sunglasses (Joe's, naturally), he smiles and tilts his chin in acknowledgement.Â
"..'they can sit at their ease and gape at the play'..." The Genoan murmurs slowly, finishing the quoted line for Nile. Shifting so the glasses slip down his aqualine nose, Nicky peers at her with fond, overcast eyes. "... do you agree, amica mio? Is it like the saying, that..." He pauses, searching for the words, his body preternaturally still, "that 'Ignorance is Bliss'...?"
It's not quite what Oscar Wilde meant, Nicky knows this better than any scholar (over a hundred years and he still smiles to think of long nights spent drinking with the playwrite, watching him wind himself up). But then, Dorian Gray was always meant to be an unreliable narrator, and the layers of such a novel cannot be encapsulated in a single quote from its pages. Contemplative, the Genoan sips from his cooling espresso and eyes the scene across the river, of the ongoing reconstruction efforts for CathÊdrale Notre-Dame.
For all that Nicolo does not favor Paris, he has seen the Cathedral through many renovations in its 800 year lifespan. Nearly as old as he, it seemed... wrong.. not to come now, when her spire will finally stretch towards the sky once more. Glancing back at Nile, Nicky smiles indulgently.Â
"... the MusÊe de l'Orangerie opens in an hour. What say we go?"
