Well:

Make them look cool, visually striking, a standout, maybe not have something visually detracting. I’m not taking Kirito seriously when he looks like an ordinary joe who shops at Hot Topic for the latest black trenchcoat but I am taking Batman seriously because he’s a big guy in a visually iconic and recognizable bat costume with a utility belt and at the very least he deliberately chose the visage of a bat to scare criminals and he’s built like a brick shithouse and better psychics than me have failed to outwit him.

Do they have a good personality? Give them one, make them at least entertaining, cool or funny. But try not to overdo any of those at least. A character can indeed be either too bland (again, Kirito) or trying too hard to be funny (Deadpool nowadays.) Also try not to remold a character just to pander to certain fans. Square did that with Cloud Strife and he became positively unbearable.

Do they play well in video games? If they do then yeah that makes a good protag. Dante plays like a dream once you get good at playing Devil May Cry games, Kyo Kusanagi plays great in KOFs where he uses rekka moves and Sonic is great when the speed is actually, yanno, fast and his Homing Attack fucking behaves itself.

Voice. Give them a voice that can emote, a VA that can do range, as in a whole range of emotions, age, inflections, accents and the like. If your protag will be voiced by pissing Sam “Use the same fake teenage nerdy voice for every fucking role and not even try to make them sound unique or even try an accent” Riegel, then yeah, that’s going to detract heavily. If its someone like Liam O Brien, or even someone iconic or beloved like Cam Clarke, Kevin Conroy or Jennifer Hale, I can dig it personally, and it can work, especially if their normal speaking voice (again, Clarke and Hale) are like orgasms to the ears.

Make sure they at least win consistently. Just as much as people hate a boring protag who always wins, on the flipside they also hate a protag that NEVER wins. As much as Ragna the BlLoodedge is a halfway alright character, he barely gets any consistent victories and is always made to look like a chump. If your character is suave, cool, friendly and sounds great, its still not going to help if they tend to get outfoxed, used or get the business end of a bad guy’s fist more often than they should.

Keep them as consistent as you can. If one minute they’re advocating torture as a means of getting info and in the next story down the line they’re telling off a guy for thinking torture is good for getting info, you kidna fucked up. Hell, getting back to Batman, he’s had moments where, while still a grim figure of darkness who fights evil, shows humane moments such as caring for a traumatized Dick Grayson after the poor lad’s parents were killed by mobster sabotage, giving young street hoodlum Jason Todd a chance after the little bugger tried nicking the Batmobile’s wheels and tried to apologize to the revived Todd who was having a go at him for not just killling Joker. Hell, the Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue” shows him at his most compassionate when he comforts young Ace in her final moments, thus allowing her to peacefully pass away, and not dying while causing a catastrophe like everyone feared. Unfortunately other stories had him being belligerent and untrustworthy to others, was a dick to Stephanie Brown if I recall, was paranoid with the Justice League and kept files on how to take them down if they ever went rogue without letting them know beforehand and  we all know what Frank Miller did to him in the mid 2000s. And tried to do in the late 2000s-early 2010s.

To cut that paragraphs short, keep heroes consistent, don’t fucking derail them for kicks, if they do suddenly change at least try to give a good explanation about it.

And if they get a happy ending, don’t override it for no good reason. Poor poor Raiden...
