How do you feel about epic fantasy? What's your favorite series? For a really long time I thought I didn't like fantasy novels. My husband is a serious fantasy reader from Name of the Wind to Brandon Sanderson and Game of Thrones. That and space sci-fi are his bread and butter. But reading books like Nightrender by Jodi Meadows reminds me that I just need the right fantasy novel. This beginning to a new duology tells the story of three kingdoms on the brink of war as a dark magic seeps into the world and threatens all of humanity. Told from three alternating and equally compelling perspectives, the reader is privy to Hanne's scheming, Rune's attempts to bring peace, and the Nightrender's struggle to remember what happened the last time she was summoned almost four hundred years earlier. While I didn't love the romance between two of the characters I really enjoyed how morally grey each of this was as well as their complex motivations and, at times, terrible choices. Oberall, I gave Nightrender 4🌟 and would recommend it to fans of Sarah J. Mass and Sabaa Tahir.
