Review: Elton John - “Looking Up”

As he previews a track from a new studio LP due early next year, Elton John seems in an optimistic mood.

“Looking Up,” the first single from Wonderful Crazy Night, is an up-tempo rocker with John’s boogie-woogie piano, Davey Johnstone’s guitar and Nigel Olsson’s drums figuring prominently in the mix. It thankfully owes more to John’s 1970s heyday than his lost decade of the 1980s.

While it’s not destined to become a classic, “Looking Up” also will not send fans scurrying to the head when it pops up in future setlists. As it is, John’s sunny music suits Bernie Taupin’s optimistic lyrics perfectly.

Nowadays I’m thinking that/time is wasted looking back/I’m looking up more than I look down/the view’s a whole lot better second time around

A tad trite perhaps. But for a 68-year-old making his 33rd solo album in an era when albums don’t sell, John’s come up with a tune that’s much better than it has to be - or that one might reasonably expect at this stage.

Co-produced by John and T Bone Burnett, Wonderful Crazy Night is available for preorder and set for a Feb. 5, 2016, release.
