As a child Rein grew up in a deeply homophobic viking cult, and as an adult he witnessed even more bad things happen to people like himself. Hiding his nature allowed him to survive and avoid trouble (for the most part) during his travels through 12th century Europe, and he eventually befriended a bunch of pragmatic craftsmen who aren't judgmental of queer people at all. Despite that he is still very ashamed of who he is, just not so much when he's alone with Njall.
