Our top picks this month in science + parenthood! MoM's Picks: May 2018
Our top picks this month in science + parenthood! May 2018 was a big month for the Mother of Microbes blog: our first official month in action! Check out our stories from this month, and highlights of our favorite new scientific studies, news stories, and blog articles. Mother of Microbes Stories: Chemical pregnancies: how scientific advances in detecting pregnancy early have created a new class of grievers (May 27, 2018) Childbed fever: not just the “doctor’s plague” of history (May 20, 2018) Children’s autism linked to Dad’s DNA mutations (May 20, 2018) Microbes make the most of milk: Part 1 (May 13, 2018) Genetic testing for pregnancy: a good bargain or overboard? (May 13, 2018) A Double-Edged Sword: The Long-Term Effects of Antibiotics in Infants (Authored by Elie Diner. May 13, 2018) Popular Science: Five Blood Transfusions, One Bone Marrow Transplant — All Before Birth. Many genetic disorders ultimately lead to a baby dying before birth. The disease alpha thalassemia is usually one of those, but perhaps not any more. Blood transfusions, including one containing therapeutic stem cells, were delivered to a mother whose baby had this disease. And the baby was recently born alive and healthy! This offers great promise for treating genetic disorders in-utero. “Goodnight sweetheart, I love you": Mum's final words to 'miracle' baby boy before she found him dead in his cot. A mother takes her sick baby boy, who it took 8 years to conceive, to multiple doctors. They all tell her he has a viral infection and will be fine, but tragically she finds him dead in his cot one morning. An investigation revealed that at least 4 different doctors could have prevented the sepsis that caused his death. This story highlights the dangers of undiagnosed bacterial infections in young infants. It also seeks to raise awareness for better hospital practices in diagnosis and treatment. Mum wants postnatal depression awareness after dad's suicide. This is a heartbreaking story about a new father who lost his life to depression after the birth of his child. It emphasizes how important mental health awareness and treatment is for both Mom and Dad. Reframing mommy brain. Pregnancy changes the brain, but there’s no evidence that it actually causes a decline in mental performance or memory. This article argues that there may be evolutionary advantages to what we know as “mom brain." Our judgements about ourselves may make us view these changes in a negative light. But really, they may help us perform better. For Every Woman Who Dies In Childbirth In The U.S., 70 More Come Close. This story of an otherwise healthy 25 year old woman who nearly dies in childbirth sets the stage for an examination of why so many new mothers, especially in the United States, nearly die each year. Beyond the financial difficulties, these traumatic birth experiences can also have long lasting emotional impacts. Blog Articles: ASM Microbial Sciences: Of moms and microbes: baby’s first microbiome. This in-depth article published on the addresses many scientific aspects of how our microbiomes get to be the way they are, addressing important topics such as C-sections and antibiotics. Science Mom: Science Mom's guide to water: part 7. In this post I especially like the amazing cartoon describing the different properties of water. Great for child and adult audiences alike! Expecting Science: An early beta hCG test is a good predictor of an ongoing pregnancy. This article has a great description of the pregnancy hormone hCG, and what different levels of it mean at different times in your pregnancy. I rarely have time to go through scientific literature for anything other than my work, so I get super excited (and grateful) when I see solid summaries of scientific studies about pregnancy and motherhood. Particularly when they are well written, like this one! Slide Talk: How to structure a 15-minute presentation: beginning at the end. Admittedly, this isn't about parenthood or microbes, but 1) It's a great article and very useful, and 2) It's my blog, and I can post what I want to. New Scientific Studies: Students propose revision of listeriosis guidelines for safer pregnancy: This study reframes the way we view the risk of listeriosis during pregnancy. What foods we think are dangerous vs. safe may not be as clear as we thought. For me this was very compelling because I once contracted listeriosis from an unknown source, even though I was avoiding all of the classic “dangerous” foods. It is also amazing because the research was conducted by two 14-year-olds! Truly the next generation of amazing scientists! Variations in placental microbiota appear related to premature birth. Another exciting discovery in the field of human microbiology! Until recently the placenta was thought to be a sterile bacteria-free environment. Now compounding research suggests that maternal infection may play an important role in adverse infant outcomes, including premature birth . Article Link Male depression may lower pregnancy chances among infertile couples. We know that dads play a big role in caring for a baby, but this article shows that they are important in making one as well (beyond the obvious reasons). In general, I think male mental health is generally neglected during the process of conceiving and having a child, so I’m glad more research is being done in this field. Article Link Cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) discovered at last. High exposure before birth to a hormone called anti-Müllerian hormone was linked to PCOS. The effect could be reversed using IVF drugs used to regulate hormones. Clinical trials are in the works. Article Link Pilot study examines the effects of virtual reality on reducing anxiety and improving pregnancy rate of women having fertility treatment. After reading Ready Player One, I am pretty convinced that virtual reality will play a huge role in our future. Here’s an idea for using virtual reality to do good: reducing anxiety. Women who experience infertility experience high levels of stress and anxiety. I am not convinced that this actually affect conception, but it certainly sounds like a good idea for the mental health of these brave women! That's all for this month, have a wonderful June!
