When God said not to worship graven images He was including the heart of stone entombed in the old man. This stone cold image of a fallen angel whose pride caused him to be doomed to eternal damnation. Today's society is obsessed with self, its desires and aspirations and emotions. To achieve personal fulfillment is the greatest accomplishment of any human according to popular talk shows helmed by famous gurus and "enlightened" sophisticates......but the new creature knows no satisfaction in the vain pursuit of "fulfillment" outside of Jesus Christ. The new creature and his new heart. The stone has been rolled out of the place it once occupied behind the left fourth and fifth rib and now what remains in its place? Emptiness? Hollowness? Not a bit of it! The ribs now shelter a soft and tender heart. A heart in pursuit of something far and away from itself. Rather this tender hearted creature desires to return the affections of One who has set the beat of its own thumping rhythm. All of us have "yokes of slavery", things that threaten to tie us down or put us in boxes. It can be something as simple as our expectations of ourselves created by comparing ourselves with others. These unhealthy patterns can lead us to put yokes on ourselves that don't need to be there. Christ has created us to be free. When we are able to get into the habit of reminding ourselves daily not to be burdened by our self created yokes of slavery, it is then that we will experience real freedom.
