Have you ever heard a recurring synth line that was so ear-wormy that it lodges itself in your sad ass dome and refuses to leave…

…..this is DEAF DANCE and this is “DESTINATION.”

The Los Angeles based duo of Jerry Narrows (ex-Flaamingos) & Julie Louise are the culprits of said synth lines & a whole batch of post-punk nuggets that take their cues from a healthy mix of shoegaze, dream-pop, and Goth.

I know a shit ton of groups who get saddled with the “it sounds like Joy Division” tag, most of which rarely sound like the lauded Manchester group (see Interpol), yet Deaf Dance actually pull off that urgent call-&-response of manic six-string and icy synth. Whereas the comparison usually amounts to someone singing in monochromatic baritone, the actual music of Joy Div rarely gets its proper due and that’s precisely what the LA duo achieve across the moving 2:43 of “Destination.”

This shouldn’t be taken as a bout of idol worship, Deaf Dance manage to sound wholly like themselves while snagging choice pieces of influence from those that came before them. “Destination” sees a wall of feedback give way to a minimal yet driving drum machine beat, as Narrow’s echoed vocal floats above Louise’s icy bed of synths, only to find his cooing interrupted by noisy fits of six-string. 

There’s just enough noise to keep you gazing down at your imaginary pedal board, yet there’s plenty of cold emotion to keep you coming back for more…..
