"New Junon" evening dress by Maria Grazia Chiuri for House of Dior, spring/summer 2017 haute couture, edition 2024. "Ivory, lavender, yellow, and pink pleated synthetic tulle."
a certain permanent remainder
Rude has a theory about assholes. He explained it to me one day. >>
“When you’re killing something, the exhilaration marks you as a survivor. The point is you are not the one who is dead. If someone is cruel—if someone gets off on it—that asshole is high on relief, the relief of knowing that if it’s happening to that guy, that means it’s not happening to me.”
I took this in slowly, like I was hearing him on the other side of a thick pane of glass. I don’t remember much about that time period beyond this conversation, even today.
“Assholes believe the world holds a certain permanent remainder of pain,” he said. “All the math in the world can’t resolve it, can’t make the harm go away. This excess misery has got to go somewhere. So the assholes do cruel and horrible shit not because they enjoy pain, but because they need to ensure that they’re not the ones stuck with the pain, stuck with that reminder that we’re all basically doomed to hurt. They move it on, pass it along to whoever’s too weak to push it back or get out of the way.”
I don’t think Rude is wrong about this. Unfortunately, almost all of us are, to a certain extent, assholes.
so give me what i want
“What I get off on,” I said in his ear, “is you, being you, doing this. Since I’ve always been at your mercy—“ he made a strangled noise at this, but I carried on— “after all these years I think it’s only fair to give me what I want now. It’s not a crime to want your happiness. It’s not a crime to get off on that. It’s what I’ve wanted, all this time. I’ve waited long enough,” I said, my lips touching his ear. “So give me what I want.”

Here’s the last bit. I think of these like aural animatics, kind of sketchy but potentially an interesting direction.
Posted in support of my New Year’s resolution to embrace the cringe. Don’t like, don’t listen. I don’t own these characters. Lemon in later chapters.
Not sure this works quite as well. But here’s Part 2.
