As the first day of school approached, I had serious anxiety. Was I going to find my people at business school? I studied opera in college, then went to a conservatory for my masterâs degree. After freelancing as a musician, I pivoted into the nonprofit world and immediately felt at home. I knew business school was a good step for my nonprofit career, but would I have anything in common with my classmates?Â
At a Net Impact happy hour during the opening term, I found my people.Â
I had come to Georgetown with the intention of getting involved with the Net Impact chapter, but I had no idea it would become such an important part of my business school experience. At the happy hour, we introduced ourselves, talked about our backgrounds, and shared a mutual moment of, âWhat the heck are we doing here?â But then we started talking about our passions. My new friends wanted to learn about the intersection of business and environmental sustainability. They were active in various social justice movements. And they all believed that a business school education could help them achieve these impact goals.Â
Net Impact events are the highlight of my school weeks. From Net Impactâs innovative career days to its powerful speakers and workshops, the clubâs programming never disappoints. I especially loved going to the Net Impact Conference in Detroit. In addition to the excitement of the conference, the trip was a fun way to get to know my fellow Net Impact members better.Â
Net Impact has given me a lot, so itâs only right that I return the favor. I now serve as Co-VP of the Social Impact Internship Fund (SIIF). Net Impactâs SIIF raises money for McDonough students working low or unpaid summer internships in the social impact space. Past recipients have worked in emerging markets microfinance, public education systems, and so much more. You can learn more about SIIF here: https://www.georgetownsiif.com/.Â
Georgetown believes in cura personalis, and this Jesuit value really ties our community together. If you are interested in the social impact space, McDonough is the right place for you.
We Net Impact-ers canât wait to meet you in the fall!

Net Impact Kogod is our American University chapter of the global Net Impact organization. This organization connects undergraduate, graduate, and professionals around the world who are interested in finding the intersection between profitability and positive social impact.Â
Our Kogod chapter serves the cohort by providing direct access to this massive network of business-minded folks from all industries and markets. Specifically, we provide students with social and learning events to examine how much American University students can push themselves to become more civically engaged and aware of critical national initiatives such as Sustainability, Impact Investing, Climate Justice, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices.Â
As part of this incredible organization - I was able to attend the Net Impact Leadership Conference this past September. This event connected graduate students and professional chapters from all over the world - reaching mission-driven individuals in over 20 different countries! Our daily activities included hands-on workshops and panels from sustainability thought leaders and advocates.Â
These learning opportunities and connections are so critical in digital and remote times - reminding us that we all have much more in common than we have apart. Not only does Net Impact Kogod reach a wide audience of students and advocates outside of campus - our cohort has committed to contributing to our local community as well!Â
As of this fall, Net Impact will be the official home of the AU Sustainability Club and is a partner of the AU Office of Sustainability providing attendance and support to their important student-centric mission.Â
