When are Costume Details Ever Really Something to Overlook With Ateez?
Is this the place where I geek out over space? Is this the time?
Via Wooyoung’s Instagram: NASA shouts out Ateez’s new song.
I mean. It seems like the time is now.
But what I want to talk about specifically are the patches featured in the Inkigayo outfits.

There are a few different custom Ateez Space Shuttle-like crew patches.
But then there are at least four specific NASA mission patches I noticed throughout the costume set.
SMS photo from SBS showcases Hongjoong wearing a sweatshirt with the Spacelab 2 mission patch. A closer look at the patch from the National Air and Space Museum.
The first is for Spacelab 2. (Or STS-51, the official naming system for Space Shuttle missions) Spacelab was the predecessor to the International Space Station. It was a small lab space on Space Stations where different nations could send experiments they wanted to conduct in space.
This flight was also notable for a couple other fun reasons: the Cola Wars went to space. Coca Cola and Pepsi each developed their own mechanism for dispersing carbonated beverages in zero gravity. Astronauts were supposed to pick a winner. Ironically, Tang still came out on top. Because even though the drinks were fizzy, there was no way to refrigerate the soda in space.
Oh, this Spacelab flight also marked the first time dinosaur fossils were brought to space. Dinos in space!
Via Seonghwa’s Instagram. You can clearly see the 100th Space Shuttle Mission Patch. A clearer image is from the Air Force Museum.
The guys are also seen wearing a 100th Space Shuttle Flight commemorative patch. That mission, STS-92, saw astronauts docking with the International Space Station that was well under construction. They went on spacewalk missions to install the truss system that would be the framework for solar panels and communications (like TV in space!)
Via Jongho’s Instagram, STS-133’s patch is visible on his arm. A closer look at the patch details from the National Air and Space Museum.
The third patch I noticed commemorates Space Shuttle Discovery’s final flight (STS-133) This was the third to last space shuttle before total retirement of the program.

STS-134 was the final mission of Space Shuttle Endeavor. The crew, lead by now Sen. Mark Kelly, went on the final trip where the Space Shuttle crew carried parts to construct the International Space Station.
These are patches that mark a golden era of cooperation in space travel, exploration, and experimentation between nations. With the end of the Space Shuttle program, and no clear successor from the civilian governmental agency, NASA has been set to rely on private partners in a way they never have before. In a way that puts private companies in the lead, instead of in a supporting role.
By 2030, the ISS will be shuttered and brought back down to Earth, further segmenting space exploration into a new era with a Space Race 2.0 between nation states and private corporations. (China already has their space station in low orbit, as they work towards heading to the moon.)
I tried to keep it short - but once I start talking about space the nerd level gets amped up.
Even if this has nothing to do with Ateez lore (which is really not my area of expertise)… the attention to detail from the stylists is once again amazing.
