Since Missing Link has been cancelled and will be forever missing, I might as well share a crack theory I came up with about Nept:
I know this was almost definitely not going to happen in canon, but I really got into the idea that Nept was Ephemer reincarnated, kind of like Player 2 was the original Player who melted into a new heart. The main thing that got me thinking about it was how Nept kept reminding me a bit of Ephemer, and also this moment:
Which really reminded me of the way Ephemer and Player met and the “let’s go together” moment they had when Ephemer and Skuld arrived to rescue Player from the Keyblade War. Plus Player 2’s reaction to shaking hands with Nept was so sweet but kind of made me go 👀 as well because they had only just met. Nept being Ephy reincarnated would sort of explain why Player 2 reacted the way they did.
And there’s also how Nept probably knows more about Player 2’s situation than he’s letting on, since he apparently was about to say something to the Player but cut himself off and instead chose to say that they hadn’t shaken hands yet, and he also told Player 2 that it’s much easier to avoid attention when you’re part of a society.
I really think it would be very interesting and bittersweet if Player and Ephemer were able to reunite but as different people because they both melted into new hearts (ie. reincarnated), and even though they didn’t consciously remember each other their hearts remembered for them. Like I’ve already said, it probably had a zero percent chance of becoming canon but I think it’s fun to think about what it could’ve been like if Nept really was Ephy reincarnated.
