Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the National Parks in Kerala spread over an area of 285 sq. kilometers. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is laid with serene vegetation in a valley between the Annamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala.

Fauna and Flora

This National Park in Kerala offers a scintillating sight of rare wild animals.There are many different species of fauna and flora that can be found in the wildlife sanctuary.The fauna here include Nilgiri langur, Lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri tahr, Asian elephant, Spotted deer, Indian wild dog, several species of snakes and spiders, and innumerable bird species.

The park is also home to a few tigers and the elusive panther.There are also bonnet macaques, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, turtles, darters, little cormorants, and black eagles

The sanctuary also has a variety of trees mainly teak, neem, sandalwood and rosewood. The oldest teak tree ‘Kannimari’ stands tall here.

Some Other Activities

Tourists can trek in certain areas of the forest and have to obtain permission from the forest officials before hand. Boating and other activities are also available at the reservoir at the Parambikulam Sanctuary. The area is being considered as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Timing

Entry into the sanctuary is allowed frm 7 in the mornoing till 6 in the evening. Visitors are allowed into Parambikulam only between 7 am and 6 pm; no vehicles can leave the park after 6.30 pm. The entry fee is a paltry Re 0.50; for light vehicles an entry fee of Rs 5 is payable, for heavy vehicles, it’s Rs 10. Permits are issued by the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) at Thiruvananthpuram (Tel: 62217), the Field Director, Project Tiger at Kottayam, and the Divisional Forest Officer at Parambikulam.

Best Time To Visit

December to February are the best months to visit the sanctuary.

How To Get There

By Air Nearest airport is Coimbatore in Tamilnadu state, about 55 km from Palakkad. By Train Nearest railway station is Pollachi about 65 km. By Bus Parambikkulam is accessible by road from Pollachi in Tamilnadu. Palakkad-Pollachi is about 45 km by road and Pollachi-Parambikkulam is about 65 km by road.

A week back, I had been to a lesser known hill station called Nelliampathy situated in Kerala. The occasion was my parents’ anniversary and as I couldn’t remember the last time I took them out (except to the multiplex), I decided to organize a short road trip. Accompanied by a close family friend of ours, we left late in the morning and got to the destination by around afternoon. It was on very short notice they accepted to join us on our day’s trip. I hadn’t looked up the place on the web and was basing the entire journey on the experience our neighbours had, a few weeks prior to ours.

The place was insanely beautiful; the weather, cool; air, pure and landscape, lush green. We had the time to visit two of the spots frequented most by tourists. All of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. On the flip side, I was constantly whipping my iPhone out to capture the landscapes and spots I thought were unique to the place and of course, to take the occasional family portraits for keepsakes.
