now as much as i like to write neji and hotaru being all devoted to eachother (which is true don't get me wrong. they care for eachother deeply), i think that a big part of their relationship is that they have Much Bigger things in their lives to prioritize than eachother. but that doesn't mean that they don't love eachother any less!
with hotaru, her family/clan—for better or for worse—are a big part of her life. a big goal of hers is to change how things operate, along with trying to mend things with her family. and with neji, he's trying to change the ways of his clan, along with trying to figure out who he is outside of being a hyuga (not to mention he's also a jounin so he's pretty busy with missions). even after hotaru fully returns to the leaf, she has to grapple with trying to figure out who she's like as a person. her whole life was being on the run and learning that certain events that happened, but not in the way she had believed (i.e: the death of her mother).
so yeah, a lot of weird identity crisis going on. not to mention the fact that even after she steps down as clan head, retires as a shinobi and becomes a historian, she's constantly out traveling the world (cause turns out travelling is pretty fun when there's no threat of dying). she's a very free-sprited person, and it's something that she isn't compromising on this. she doesn't really like staying in one place in one time for more than a few months.
a normal part of their relationship is hotaru just being away for weeks—or even months on end sometimes—doing research. it's something that they both don't really acknowledge unless she talks about it. like a river, it's a constant ebb and flow, and it's a comforting thing. there's no need to explain or feel guilt for not being around all the time.
idk, my favorite thing about them is all the stuff that's left usaid. how neji always brings stuff to drink whenever she's awake at night on the porch. how hotaru leaves souvenirs on his nightstand once she knows that he's asleep, or how they communicate through their gazes and light touches. no matter what changes, they both have this.

hotaru ayato
hotaru is my main naruto oc! i made her back in 2017 and last year was when i decided to revamp her cause...you can tell i was 13 when i made her lmao (to be cringe is to be free but still). i won't go too deep into her lore cause i'm still trying to write it all out but here's some things to know.
- she's aroallo (demiromantic bisexual).
- she's the middle child of 3 siblings (her older twin brother ozora and her younger sister mayumi). her parents are chiharu and kyoya ayato.
- she specializes in taijutsu (hand-to-hand) and kenjutsu (swords) and ninjutsu is her weakness. she has a hard time visualizing things in her mind (aphantasia) and because of that, it makes preforming jutsu hard for her.
- her clan (the ayato clan) is a mid-tier clan from the land of water. they're known for their psychokinesis (and their time manipulation jutsu). the few people who have stayed in the compound say it operates like a cult.
- the majority of the clan are either lightning users (like hotaru), or water users. every few generations, there's someone who can use fire.
- it's said that ayatos tend to not live long due to their kekkei genkai's impact on the brain. the more you rely on the jutsu (i.e: frequently lifting heavy things with your mind, using it for prolonged periods of time etc.) the larger strain it puts on the brain, eventually giving you brain damage.
- she has an owl summon by the name of yukina (he's a snowy owl---a species of owl that are diurnal)
nejitaru lore
now when i tell you that their lore is LONG, i mean it. so here's the (really short) bullet point version of it.
- neji and hotaru met pre hyuga affair (neji was 3 and hotaru was 4). hotaru and her mother were in konoha and they meet while they're at a park. over the years, they become fast friends.
- eventually, when hotaru was 6 years old, her and her mother had to move back to their home village. they keep in touch via letters, but by the time neji is in the academy, he stops sending hotaru letters (though he would still read her letters on occasion). her letters become less frequent—going from once a day to once every few weeks to finally stopping by the time he graduates.
- when neji is 14, his team gets assigned a mission and hotaru (going under the name hirano) ends up becoming their guide after seeing them fighting a group of missing-nin.
- they go to the village, retreive the required scrolls, but the get ambushed. hotaru's cover is blown. eventually, they manage to escape and take shelter. neji + hotaru end up talking and she tells him that he can't reveal her true identity due to her faking her death to escape from her clan. they end up returning to the leaf and hotaru ends up living there.
- they slowly get close again over the next few years, rebuilding their friendship. overtime, hotaru opens up about what had happened during their years apart.
- huge detour here, but walk with me. not much about the clan's history is known, especially their dojutsu, the hyougan—an ocular jutsu that allows the user to manipulate time. in the beginning of the clan's existence, the hyougan is something that was common amongst he clan. but due to constant wars with both rival clans in the warring states period, along with bloodline thieves, it's rare to see the dojutsu manifest within the clan in the modern day.
- hotaru's mother—chiharu ayato—was the second person to unlock the hyougan as a child, and her mother destroyed her eyes so she wouldn't risk getting killed by bloodline thieves. chiharu grew up thinking that she was born blind as a result. hotaru first showed her hyougan when she was 5 years old. it becomes a huge deal in the clan because hotaru, at least to those who don't know, is the first person to unlock the hyougan in generations.
- she's subjected to multiple experiments growing up, trying to figure out how it's possible she was able to unlock it and is groomed by her father to be the next clan head (even though she made it clear that she didn't even want to become a ninja). she ends up faking her death and running away at the age of 11 to escape the abuse. this can be its own separate post tbh.
- anyways...back to them. she writes neji one last letter, talking about what she feels for him ("i never knew if what i feel for you is romantic exactly, but what i do know is that i'd lay down my life for you. you're incredibly dear to me and i hope that you feel the same way." —in a nutshell) and asking if they can meet one last time before she goes.
- neji comes back from a mission and hotaru is bandaging his hand before they have tea and stargaze together. they beat around the bush before they start talking about their letters and...Whatever The Fuck They Are. both make it clear that while neither of them really know how relationships work, they both decide to give a relationship a shot.
- hotaru leaves and wouldn't return for several years (long distance relationship ftw). though they do write to eachother as often as possible and neji occasionally visits her village (sometimes with his team). eventually, once her clan/village is back on track, she gives the hat to her brother and she moves back to the leaf and her and neji's relationship really kicks off after that.
- god this is so watered down and a whole mess but this is the closest i can get to a sussinct version of the lore i'm sorry that it's so all over the place FHDKGHDF
nejitaru dynamic
- a huge aspect of their dynamic is the fact that they're both demiromantic (not having any romantic attraction unless there is a strong emotional bond). it's why it takes them so long for them to get together. even though they care for eachother very deeply, the romantic attraction doesn't come into play until post-war. in hotaru's case, she's either in love or isn't at all, no in between. she's had crushes in the past, and every one of them were on close friends of hers. it's something she's hated because it's caused her to lose friends (and it led into a very messy situationship at one point in her life). so needless to say, there's a lot of repression of feelings on her end the moment she realizes she's falling for neji because fuck, what if i lose him too?
- as for neji, he always assumed that it's totally normal to only fall in love with someone you have a strong bond with. everyone does it. after all, "why wouold you fall in love with a stranger?" is genuinely shocked to learn that no. not everyone is that way. also kept his feelings to himself because he doesn't want to risk the friendship and is also wanting to make 100% sure that these feelings aren't just a fleeting thing.
- literally the only reason they ended up together is because yukina (her owl), tired of hearing hotaru bemoan her feelings, decide to take her confession letter that she planned on throwing out and delivers it to neji and tells him to "do what you will with this information." everyone say thank you, yukina.
- yapper x listener!! hotaru is a certified yapper and best believe that neji will listen to her like a podcast. he remembers everything she says, even the innocuous things.
- hotaru is very physical when it comes to affection. initially, neji isn't entirely comfortable with it, but hotaru helps to ease him into it. now she can't really tell who's more touchy between them (though he only does that in private).
- yukina is neji and hotaru's child lol

in the mood to yap about parent hotaru (+ some chiharu lore) cause why not. everyone except @amethystedream can ignore this
so for starters, hotaru would borderline be a helicopter parent, especially when the twins are younger. like she can't be away from them for too long, always hovering. every night, she has to check on them to make sure they're sleeping properly. and even then, hotaru's also checking for their chakra signatures when she's in bed. it's even worst considering hiyori's condition and the fact that chiharu has the hyougan.
outside of neji, the only person she trusts enough to watch the twins is hinata (and even then, she's still very anxious if they aren't home). it gets to a point that her family doesn't get to meet them until they're preteens, though that's mostly because she doesn't trust that anything bad won't happen to them considering they're the daughters of the formal clan head. she's not taking any chances.
she does eventually chill out and becomes more of the chill parent (though she still has her moment). but this all stems from deeply rooted anxiety. both of her kids being harmed, and because typically, ayato children don't live for long due to shitty genetics, so in her eyes, she has to do whatever it takes to ensure that they'll stay as healthy as possible.
but, as they grow up, she does eventually chill out. stifling them isn't going to protect them. it also helps that they at least know how to defend themselves. there's a lot more to this, but i'm too tired to elaborate HDJFJSIF
as for chiharu, i decided that she'll get the hyougan. she unlocks it when she's around 12 years old.
god hotaru and chiharu makes me sad sometimes because chiharu makes hotaru realize that no, she's not over her mother's death. whenever she looks into chiharu's eyes, a part of regrets naming her after her mother because they look so alike it's painful. it's even worst when chiharu unlocks the hyougan. it's as if hotaru's mother reincarnated or something, almost like a second chance. it's heartwarming to think that her mother still lives on in a way, but equally bittersweet. though hotaru draws comfort from the fact that her daughter won't have to go through the horrific stuff from that bygone era.
chiharu has a fascination with swords, so much so that she eventually gets hotaru's twin swords when she's older. it's her main style of fighting (meanwhile, hiyori is more proficient in gentle fist).

neji does go on to meet hotaru's family post war, even though she tried really hard to keep that from happening. her brother---ozora---is who finds him first (they actually met before, when zora tries to take hotaru back to their home village. but they're on decent terms nowadays) and him and his sister naoko lowkey ambush him lmao. they just want to meet the guy who's managed to get with their sister :)))
and neji is so damn confused because why the fuck are these people trying to get me to come back to this village. are they all like this?? (read: the apple doesn't fall far from the tree💀). after a lot of questioning, ozora admits that they're planning to surprise hotaru. plus they may or may not have already planned a dinner so he really should come! neji reluctantly agrees, at least he'll get to see hotaru.
and needless to say, hotaru is Not Happy at the fact her siblings ambushed him like that. but seeing neji actually...getting along with them surprises her. perhaps she was worried over nothing. she does still give her siblings shit for not telling her in advance though.
