YEARS AGO, WITHIN the depths of her own personal hell, Nora would have barked a laugh had anyone told her that she would be free —— that she would have friends, people to care about and that cared of her in return. She wasn’t used to her heart feeling so opened, as if her rib cage had been pried open and people crawled inside of her chest to make it difficult to breathe; her head was already full of others, why not her heart too. It felt like a mystery as to how she and Bee ended up in her run-down apartment, take-out splayed across the coffee table, some stupid program playing on television… only the mystery was how she’d come to care, so slowly and then all at once.
Perhaps it was the couple of drinks she left empty in the sink; she didn’t think it was that much, enough to make a fool of herself or somehow lose control of her own mind. Telepathy was still in check, there were no voices but her own asking why in he hell she was leaning in to kiss Bee… or why she went through with it —— softly, meaningful, like walking on ice ( which terrified her and might have explained why her heart was beating so quickly ).
She reeled back, lips parted in a soft look of surprise at her own impulse, though also a fear in her that she’d so suddenly ruined everything. “I’m sorry, I should have asked… or just not have done that. I’m an idiot.”
