NON- covid cancellation issue... Refund "lost"! Unique situation, need advice!
Hello everyone. I've combed this site looking for anything that might help but as it turns out there are lots of covid related cancellation posts and I cannot find anything helpful. Please if anyone can assist I would be grateful. I'm sorry this is long, I will try to simplify.
In Dec '18 I booked a family vacation through Airbnb. I paid half down ~$900 and the other half was due to go through in April, which was fine. Several months later, I dropped my old bank (Chase) for a local bank when I bought a house. Being busy with a house purchase etc., I forgot that the second half of that amount was due to hit in April as an auto transaction through that same Chase account and was declined. Trip was cancelled due to that.
The host allowed a full refund for the first half, but I could not change the account that the money would be refunded to. Support said that it must be refunded to the same account that I booked through. I said that account does not exist. They said then it will "ping" back once it is declined and we will send a check.
Well it never "pinged" back. According to Airbnb, the refund was accepted by Chase, and they provided me with "Bank ARN" numbers to prove this. Closed my case. I took this information to Chase bank (who no longer has any vested concern with my issues) via customer service and played a back and forth, explaining the situation more times than I would like. Finally they said they would investigate and call me back.
I received a check in the mail in August 2019 from chase for the full amount, pending the results of the investigation. When I called to clarify, I learned that they had assumed this was a fraudulent charge claim that I was disputing, despite all my explanations. I did not dare cash this check which was good because they sent me a notice later that month telling me that they found there were no fraudulent charges, and would be removing that amount from my account. That no longer exists. (I still have the check just in case that gets hairy.)
At this point, I went to the local Chase office and spoke with their bank manager, who kindly got Chase's appropriate customer service person on the phone who said these numbers mean nothing, either they do not exist or they don't even know what ARN#s are, I don't remember which. Basically, they had no money, neither evident with the ARNs or hidden my non existent account. He also spoke with Airbnb who said it absolutely did go through, but they needed a representative from chase to put their claim that it had not in writing, complete with the dates, amounts refunded, my card number, the ARNs and on official bank paper.
I did this, got it from the bank manager, sent it to them, and received notice back from Airbnb that the person sending this was not official enough. Problem is, I can't get through to customer service to anyone else without spending hours a day on the phone, re-explaining this story, only to get nowhere as I have so many times this far.
I let this issue go for a bit out of exasperation and Covid but now I could really use my $900. It's my money. I considered small claims court but read that I must go to the courts in the jurisdiction where they are located, which would be CA if I'm not mistaken? I'm in Ohio. A plane ticket costs $900 to get there and back. Also, the burden of proof lies with me. If I take them to SCC, and they show these mysterious ARN numbers as proof, the court might find for them and tell me to take Chase to SCC.
HELP. $900 is a lot of money for me, particularly right now. I don't know what else to do. Airbnb has closed my case. I have two years to go to SCC. If I hire a lawyer, I would spend that much in legal fees and there is no saying I would even win to reclaim them.
