Name: Nedoceratops hatcheri
Name Meaning: Insufficient Horned Face
First Described: 2007
Described By: Ukrainsky
Classification: Dinosauria, Ornithischia, Genasauria, Neornithischia, Cerapoda, Marginocephalia, Ceratopsia, Neoceratopsia, Coronosauria, Ceratopsoidea, Ceratopsidae, Chasmosaurinae, Triceratopsini
Nedoceratops is a dubious genus of Ceratopsian that is thought to be an ontogenetic stage of Triceratops and, thus, not it’s own genus. It was originally described in Othniel Charles Marsh’s Ceratopsidae monograph, which he died before completing; leading to the original specimen being described as Diceratops by Lull. However, this genus was used by an insect, and later Diceratops was assigned to Triceratops, Lull thinking that it didn’t have enough differences to be in its own genus. For some reason, though, Ukrainsky decided to separate it out again, giving the fitting name of Insufficient Horned Face. It was found Wyoming, living in the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous, sometime between 67 and 66 million years ago. It lacks a nose horn, which may indicate it’s difference, but that seems unlikely, as the horn could have been lost when the animal was alive or during fossilization.
