It’s been a long three years since I discovered San Mei’s track, ‘Wars.’ But the Gold Coast-based singer/multi-instrumentalist (born Emily Hamilton) has been a quiet achiever in the meantime, releasing tracks via her Soundcloud for the past year or so in the lead-up to her long-awaited debut EP, of which she’s just released the scuzzy title track.

In stark contrast to the moody electro pop of ‘Wars,’ ‘Necessary’ is filthy and seductive with a menacing twist, an addictive, Wolf Alice-like cut of psychedelic shoegaze as Hamilton’s sweet, siren-like vocal drags the listener further into its thrall of distorted riffs, creepy echoes and chugging drums. You know there’s an element of danger involved, but it’s much too dreamy to resist.

So I guess you could call this one a... necessary listen? C’mon, bad puns but a good song! (◕‿-)
