Historic drop in bar scores this year was unpredicted
The Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) saw a hefty 2.8 point drop in mean score between July 2013 and July 2014, and exam administrators and law deans and professors are vigorously debating the cause. Â
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) has come to the conclusion that exam takers sitting for the July 2014 exam were "less able" than exam takers who sat for the July 2013 exam. Â The NCBE claims to have checked ("and rechecked") their methods and scaled scoring from year-to-year before coming to this conclusion, according to multiple reports.
However, many professors and law school deans objected to the NCBE's characterization of the 2014 exam sitters.  Jerry Organ at The Legal Whiteboard has a nuanced analysis of the dissent, arguing that the quality of the incoming class in 2011 should not have produced such drastically "less able" exam takers.  Assessing the quality of an incoming class is, of course, fraught, but there are many studies, including this one by Dr. Susan Case of the NCBE, that suggest that you can fairly accurately predict MBE scores by looking at a combination of undergraduate GPA (UGPA) and LSAT score.
Stay tuned for updates from the wider world of standardized testing.
