Supai, Arizona
March 1-4 2020 I Was in Supai, AZ.
The Supai village is owned by native Americans and it is located in Grand Canyon. Supai village is one of the most out of reach Native Americans’ village in U.S. The village is very primitive, they still use horse and mules for transportation. Though, there are couple vehicles to carry people around. There is school, a preschool and a church. There is a basketball court, a clinic, a store and a cafe with an extensive menu for breakfast and lunch. Everything over there works from 8-5, and they close at 5. So make sure you buy your items before 5. The store has many items including water, bread, medicines, snacks, cans, fruits, sandwiches, etc. Pricing for items in both store and cafe is very reasonable. Here is few photos of the store:
And here is a photo of the cafe menu for breakfast:
Native Americans have their own special food items which includes fry bread, and Indian taco. There are couple cafes that only make and sell these items and they are located outside of the village near the campground:
In the village there is a lodge that you can book room for 440$ a night and every room accommodates unto 4 people. Or you can camp in the campground which is 110$ a night.
Supai people are nice and friendly, they welcome you to their village, say hi and smile at you, they speak English very well also :)
The hikes in Supai are really nice. To reach Supai village you should hike down for 8 miles from Hualapai hilltop. Most people go to Supai for camping. While hiking down to Supai village you can either carry your backpack (that’s what we did) or give it to mules to carry down for you which costs 200$ for 4 backpacks. Once you reach the Supai village, if you are staying at the lodge you are good, because the lodge is located in the village, but if you are camping you have to hike another 2 miles (this additional 2 miles is easy and flat).
All the waterfalls in Supai are in one direction, there are Navajo fall, Havasupai fall, Mooney fall, Beaver fall and at the end there is Colorado river. Most people did not go to Colorado River when we were there. The hikes to the falls go through rivers, and you can to cross rivers so carry water shoes. The water temperature is really good not so cold at all.
The water is really clean, here is a photo of us standing by the river :)
The falls are of Havasu (green-blue) color. It is because of the lime in the water, this in combination with red-brown color of rocks and mountains and the fresh green color of trees makes an unmatched beauty. You will love it.
