Chapter One: Sort The Bones
Read under the cut below, or on AO3!
Kurt is laying on his stomach when he hears Samās loud footfalls cascade down the stairs. āHey Kurt? Do you know where the-AGH! Is this a sex thing? Should I come back later?ā Sam asks, covering his eyes with his hands when he sees Blaine straddling Kurtās hips, rubbing along his spine.
āNo Sam, itās not a sex thing. Itās a āmy joints arenāt workingā thing. You can look, thereās nothing actually scandalous happening here. What are you looking for?ā Kurt asks, vaguely lifting his head up to look at his new(ish) roommate.
āI just wanted to know where you guys keep the spare batteries, the ones in my Xbox controller are dead. Also, what the fuck do you mean, your joints arenāt working?ā Sam asks, dropping his hand to actually look at Kurt and Blaine.
āHang on a second, Sam. Okay, Kurt, a deep breath in for me.ā Blaine says, holding his thumb against one of Kurtās rib bones. Kurt takes in one deep breath, and lets it go when Blaine tells him to, which is at the exact same time that Blaine forcefully shoves his thumb against the bone, setting the rib back into its socket. Kurt lets out a loud, painful groan, and Blaine lightly rubs over Kurtās back again. āIām sorry, love.ā
āItās fine, better than the alternative. Ugh. Yeah so, my joints donāt work. Sometimes bones will just slip out of their sockets, which makes it very painful to move. Or breathe. Oh, and the batteries should be at the top of the closet.ā Kurt gestures vaguely to his left, and tries to take another breath but heās still got a few ribs that are dislocated enough to make breathing painful.
āHow does that even happen?ā Sam asks, striding over to the hall closet.
āDo you want a science-y answer or the super simple one?ā Kurt asks, raising an eyebrow.
āSomewhere in between?ā Sam shrugs, reaching for the large box of batteries Kurt knows is in there.
āHow about this one?ā Blaine asks, gently pushing against a different rib.
āAgh, yeah. That oneās super angry.ā Kurt groans, taking in another deep breath, preparing for Blaineās shove. Itās not any less painful than the last one, Kurt realizes as he lets out another agonized groan. āBasically, there are proteins that keeps your joints jointed, and mine are misshapen, so my joints slip out of place pretty often. Ribs, shoulders, hips, knees, you name it, itās probably out of place right now. Thatās also why Iām so flexible, because all of my joints are weird, which means that they can extend farther than most peopleās can - which is pretty much the only upside. My genes just suck.ā Kurt sighs, once again accepting that this is just the way things are for him.
āHey now, your jeans always look wonderful!ā Blaine teases, pressing a kiss to Kurtās temple as his hands continue rubbing up and down his spine, searching for more bones to reset.
āJesus man, thatāsā¦rough.ā Sam winces, batteries in hand.
āIt is what it is.ā Kurt says nonchalantly. āSo what are you and Finn playing thatās killing the batteries?ā
āOh, me, Finn, and Artie are just playing some Halo. I want full batteries though, because I might play some Minecraft with Stacy and Stevie later tonight. I think they miss not having me at home.ā Sam says with a wistful smile.
āI think thatās wonderful, Sam.ā Blaine says, looking away from Kurt for a moment to smile at Sam. āItās really sweet that youāre still making time for your siblings, even though youāve moved out.ā
āYeah, well. We were all we had at one point, so being away from them is really hard, but weāre making it work. Itāll take a lot more than you losers to keep me away from them.ā Sam teases, tucking the AA batteries into his jeans pocket. āAnyway, Iāll let you two get back to making sure Kurt doesnāt die or something. Text me when dinnerās ready?ā
Kurt lays his face back into the carpet below him, giving Sam a simple thumbs-up. āWill do. Later, Sam.ā He hears Blaine say above him, and then there are Samās feet upon the stairs once more.
āOkay, so are there any other ones you can feel right now? Or do you want me to fix your hips next?ā Blaine asks.
āBlaine, you donāt have to do this you know. My hips arenāt even that bad right now, canāt we just watch a movie or something?ā Kurt grumbles, trying to avoid his words being muffled by the carpet.
āNot that bad? That means theyāre out, goofball. I know I donāt have to, but I donāt like seeing you in pain either.ā Blaine scolds.
āOccupational hazard of existing as me, Blaine. Theyāre just going to pop back out tomorrow during glee rehearsal if you fix them now, can we please please please just watch something?ā Kurt whines. Itās not very often that he tells Blaine no, but heās tired of being fixed for today.
āAlright, if you insist. Do you need a hand up?ā Blaine asks, swinging his leg over Kurtās hip so he can properly stand.
Kurt nods, and tries to sit up first. Blaine reaches out his hand and gives Kurt a hefty yank, allowing Kurt to stand up with very little effort. However, he still sees stars when heās fully upright, but Blaine keeps one hand around Kurtās waist to support him. āAaaaaaaandā¦buffering, buffering. Okay. Iām good. Did you want to watch some more Gilmore Girls?ā Kurt asks once heās feeling a little more sure on his feet.
āEh, not really in the mood today. I love that show but god, Richard and Emily give me my parents' vibes and not always in the best way. Why donāt we roll for a streaming service and find something new and mindless to watch?ā Blaine suggests once he realizes that he doesnāt really want to continue anything on their current watch list.
āYeah, alright.ā Kurt says with a small smile, grabbing the 6 sided die and little laminated sheet that the Hudson-Hummels keep in the same little basket on the living room coffee table that also holds the remote, some drink coasters, and a box of tissues. Kurt rolls the die on the table, not looking at what number itās facing as he looks upon the little cheat sheet that he made a few months ago. Burt and Carole are signed up for pretty much everything so that way New Directions get-togethers have more options for background noise and general party viewing, but sometimes that made it hard to pick what to watch. So, he came up with an idea to help narrow the options down a little bit. Each service was assigned a number, and you roll to see what to boot up. It was fairly simple, and it made movie nights run a little more smoothly.
āThree.ā Blaine says, peering over Kurtās shoulder to look at the paper. āHulu?ā
āYep. You boot up the TV, and Iāll grab us something to drink.ā Kurt says, starting to make his way out of the living room and into the kitchen.
āSnacks?ā Blaineās voice calls out.
āItās almost four, Iāll be starting dinner in like forty-five minutes.ā Kurt says with a slight chuckle.
ā...So is that a no?ā Blaineās voice responds, child-like hope evident in its tone.
āSo no, no snacks. Do you want a Sprite, Mountain Dew, or water? I think my dad and Carole drank the rest of my Diet Cokes.ā Kurt grumbles, looking into the fridge.
āSpriteās fine, thank you peach!ā Blaineās cheery voice appears again, apparently unsquashed by the lack of snacks.
When Kurt comes back into the living room with two glasses of soda in his hands, each with a color coordinating straw, he cocks his eyebrow at his boyfriend. āPeach?ā
Blaine grabs the cup with the yellow straw, leaving Kurt with the cup with the blue one. āHm?ā He hums quizzically as he takes a sip.
āYou said āthank you peach.āā Kurt sits down next to Blaine, offering him a small and nonjudgmental smile.
āOh, I guess I did. I donāt know, youāre sweet and you have a nice butt.ā Blaine shrugs his shoulders, trying to avoid drawing any attention to his ears that are starting to turn pink.
āThatās cute. Kind of tacky, but cute. I like it.ā Kurt kisses Blaineās cheek, and settles into the couch. āSo what are we watching?ā
āIām kind of feeling something lighthearted and silly.ā Blaine grabs the remote and starts flipping through their options. While narrowing down a platform had gotten easier, choosing a program had not. Too many options to be solved with dice.
They flipped mindlessly through the various lists and collections Hulu had to offer, occasionally taking small sips from their sodas, when they heard Finnās voice from behind them. āYo, they have the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series? That was my SHIT as a kid.ā
āCare to join us? Blaine wanted something kind of silly to watch, and if Joey Wheelerās accent is anything like I remember it being, Iād say this fits the bill.ā Kurt offers, gesturing towards Finnās dadās armchair.
āYou used to watch Yu-Gi-Oh?ā Blaine asks incredulously.
āThere was a boy who lived across the street who I used to hang out with a bunch when I was a kid, if my dad was at work but I didnāt have school. His name was also Joey, so he kind of got attached to the character. I would play with his brand-new Power Rangers, heād sit on the couch behind me and watched the show. Iāve seen a decent amount of it, actually. Like, can we skip the first few episodes? I donāt really care about watching Grandpaās soul get snatched.ā Kurt says nonchalantly, but Blaine is staring at Kurt as if he just grew a second head.
āI agree, we can just skip to the Yugi versus Weevil fight.ā Finn says, sitting down in the armchair.
āWhy are you looking at me like that?ā Kurt giggles, tapping Blaine on the knee.
āYou watched anime as a kid? And likeā¦retained it? Who are you and what have you done with my boyfriend?ā
āWere you not there when Mike, Artie, and Sam practically held me at gunpoint so we could all watch Death Note together?ā Kurt raises an eyebrow.
āI think I heard about that, but I donāt think I was actually there for that. Which sucks, because-ā
āIām loving this adorable banter between you lovebirds, but I was promised some childhood nostalgia?ā Finn says, cutting Blaine off and making him blush a little when he points the remote at the TV, finally pressing āplay.ā
The boys watch through the first match, giggling about how over the top 90ās anime dubbing was, but once Yugi Moto claims Weevil Underwoodās star chips for himself, Kurt excuses himself to the kitchen to begin dinner. He bought everything he needed at the store this morning, so he carefully begins making a batch of cajun chicken pasta. Other than the heavy cream in it, itāll be mostly healthy for his dad, and Finn and Sam enjoy things that are spicy, so it sounded like a good idea. Plus, Kurt enjoys attempting to make his step-brother eat vegetables, and bell peppers go great in that.
Heās able to pull it together fairly quickly, only needing to bring out his cooking stool to sit on right before the pasta water finishes boiling. Other than asking Finn to grab him the heavy cream while heās in the fridge grabbing more sodas, heās also able to do it by himself, which is a miracle these days. Kurt loves cooking, but sometimes standing over a hot stove for an hour and a half isnāt very kind to his body. Buying a small chair to sit on helped a lot, but sometimes he does need to ask Blaine or Carole to take over for a few minutes while he lays on the floor, trying to make sure that none of his joints are too hyperextended or out of place.
āDinnerās ready, you guys!ā Kurt calls out to the whole house, but making sure to text Sam about it too.
Everyone gradually shuffles into the dining room, where Kurt carries the big steel pot onto the table. He goes back into the kitchen for the microplane and a wedge of parmesan, and sets that next to the pasta as well.
The conversation around dinner is light, although halfway through, Finn and Blaine ask if they can go back to rewatching childhood cartoons.
āWhat are you guys watching?ā Sam asks after chewing a big mouthful of food.
āTheyāre watching Yu-Gi-Oh.ā Kurt says dryly, but with a small smile towards his boyfriend.
āIn the middle of dinner? Come on, guys.ā Burt says, raising an eyebrow at the two teenagers.
āItās not Friday! Can we take our food into the living room? Please?ā Finn asks, directing his attention to his mother.
āWe wonāt spill anything, promise.ā Blaine chimes in.
āCan I watch with you guys?ā Sam asks quietly, leaning into Finnās side.
Carole raises an eyebrow at Burt, who bows his head in defeat before waving the boys off. āYeah whatever. Just make sure your dishes end up in the sink.ā Burt says, not sounding anywhere near as frustrated as he looks.
Kurt and Carole smile at him, thinking itās sweet how weak he is to these teenage boys. Kurtās just thankful that him and Blaine are responsible, and wonāt allow Finn or Sam to take advantage of that fact.
The boys look at each other with big smiles, top up their bowls with more food, and scurry off into the living room.
āAre you going to watch with them, Kurt? You can if you want, like Finn said, itās not Friday. You donāt actually have to hang out with us if you donāt want to.ā Carole says with a small chuckle.
āI like hanging out with you guys. Besides, while I see its entertainment value, thatās definitely more of a them thing, I think. I may pop in later, but I wanna eat with you guys, if thatās okay. Besides, then I donāt have to worry about accidentally forgetting leftovers or anything.ā Kurt reasons with a shrug. He really does love his dad and Carole, and he feels like he hasnāt gotten to spend a lot of time with them lately.
They spend the rest of the meal mindlessly chatting away, discussing the beautiful Corvette that came into the shop this week, how excited Kurt is about winning sectionals, how Jen at work is pregnant and Carole is thinking about knitting her a baby blanket, and everything else in between. There arenāt too many leftovers by the time theyāve all announced that theyāre full, so Kurt quickly cleans up and checks on his friends in the living room. Sam and Finn have taken up the couch, so Blaine is nestled in the armchair. He quickly strides over to his boyfriend, settling down on his lap. He looks at the TV and giggles. āHey, itās the Red-Eyes Black Draygon!ā He announces, attempting Joeyās ridiculous accent.
āIndeed! Iām sorry for abandoning you at dinner, do you need help cleaning up or anything?ā Blaine asks, pressing a small kiss to Kurtās shoulder.
āNah, itās Finnās night to do dishes anyway.ā Kurt says a little bit louder, looking at his step-brother.
Finnās eyes are set on the TV, but he does give Kurt a nod, which he hopes means that the dishes are actually going to get done tonight.
āYou donāt actually have to watch this if you donāt want to. We can go upstairs and watch Gilmore Girls if you want.ā Blaine suggests.
āItās okay, I actually am kind of just enjoying this. You guys are cute, and I sort of enjoy your presence. Or something.ā Kurt teases, shifting a little bit so heās sitting on the sliver of chair to Blaineās right, but he rests his legs over Blaineās lap and sets his head on his shoulder. Blaine wraps his arms around Kurtās waist, and kisses his forehead. āPlus, if you were still planning on spending the night, we can always watch Lorelai make bad life decisions later tonight. Or tomorrow morning, honestly.ā
āSounds like a plan to me, darling. And yes, as long as your parents are still okay with it, I was kind of set on spending the night tonight.ā
āYeah, weāre all good.ā Kurt confirms, turning his head a little to look at the TV with everyone else.
A few minutes later, Samās phone goes off. āAh shit. Hey, would you guys mind waiting for me to keep watching this? My siblings want to play some Minecraft tonight and-ā
āDonāt worry about it, man. Weāll wait for ya.ā Finn says, grabbing the remote to change the TV.
āYou guys are the best. Really.ā Sam grins, and Kurt can almost swear he sees Samās eyes mist over. āI know itās kind of silly, but it does mean a lot. Thanks for being family two.ā
āWeāre happy to be your electric boogaloo. Now go, donāt keep the little ones waiting!ā Kurt teases, shooing Sam off to his room in the basement.
Sam clutches his phone in his hand and scurries off, which prompts Finn to stand up. āIn that case, Iām gonna go get a start on dishes. Iāll talk to you dorks later.ā
āāDorks?ā Who was just watching 90ās card game cartoons?ā Kurt mutters incredulously, making Blaine laugh.
āYouāve got him there, peach.ā Blaine pokes the side of Kurtās butt to accentuate the nickname. āIf everyoneās dispersing, do you wanna head upstairs?ā He asks.
Kurt nods, and climbs up off of the chair. He doesnāt wait for Blaine before heading up to his bedroom, which turns out to not matter much because Blaine follows quickly behind. Kurt takes the stairs a little slower than usual, because while his hip isnāt too bad today, it still makes things like staircases a little complicated. Heās thankful that Blaine has learned to not hover, because if he tried to support him up the stairs like Kurt was an 85-year-old grandpa, he wouldāve pushed his boyfriend down the steps.
Blaine holds open Kurtās bedroom door, which makes him giggle and pretend curtsey. āOh thank you, kind sir.ā He revels dramatically.
Blaine bows his head and follows him into the room. Itās still pretty early in the evening, so the boys decide to get some homework done while Hairspray plays in the background on Kurtās TV. Blaineās English essay takes a little while to get through, so by the time theyāre finished, itās pushing 11 P.M.
āDo you want to do something else? You look kind of tired.ā Blaine asks, concerned at how spaced out his boyfriend looks.
āI am. I donāt know if Iām ready to sleep quite yet, but I know I should probably get changed and likeā¦wash myself before sleep ambushes me.ā Kurtās laying down on top of all of his blankets, forearms thrown over his eyes.
āThat sounds like a good idea, love.ā Blaine comments.
āMmhm.ā Kurt agrees, but doesnāt move.
ā...Kurt? That doesnāt look like getting up to me.ā Blaine chuckles, gently poking Kurtās left elbow.
āThatās because itās not.ā Kurt states, unmoving.
āCome on, sleepy head. Will it make it better if I offer to shower with you?ā Blaine offers.
āAre you sure? I donāt know if I have any products or anything for you here.ā Kurt finally moves his arms from over his eyes to look at Blaine.
āYou have better shampoo than I do anyway.ā Blaine shrugs, a devilish smile appearing on his face.
āFine, yeah that does sound nice. But no wanky shit okay? I really am tired, and weāll probably have the house to ourself a bit tomorrow. I think Sam, Finn, Artie, Puck and Mike were all going to see a new Marvel movie, followed by a MarioKart tournament.ā Kurt says, keeping his tone neutral despite what heās suggesting.
āWeāll take it as it goes, I donāt like having to plan sex if we donāt have to. I just like hanging out with you! So let me hang out with you in the shower, and you can sit on your shower chair while I wash your shoulders, okay?ā Blaine says, gently running his fingers up and down Kurtās forearm.
Summary: Blaine is having a hard time forgiving himself for what happened between him and Kurt. Sam, being the bestest friend in the whole wide world, swoops in to help.
(AO3 link!)
Blaine stared at his phone for ten full minutes before he finally picked it up. It took him another five before he actually hit the ādialā button.
āHey man, whatās up?ā Sam greeted, picking up Blaineās call immediately.
āOh, nothing much. W-What are you up to?ā Blaine had no idea why he was so nervous, Sam had become his best friend over the last couple of weeks, but Blaine can feel his hands start to shake.
āEh, Iām just watching some YouTube videos. The house is empty because everyone is visiting Caroleās sister in Toledo for the weekend, so Iām just watching a bunch of Elder Scrolls lore right now. Whatās new with you? Or did I ask that already?ā Blaine could almost picture Sam looking up at the ceiling as he tries to remember if he already asked what Blaine was up to, and he canāt help but smile.
āIām kind of in the same boat, so I was wondering if you wanted toā¦I dunno, hang out or something. Unless Tamriel is really calling to you at the moment.ā
āNah, itās cool. Do you want me to bring over some movies or something? Or we can always go bowling, I know Lima Lanes is open until midnight.ā Sam suggested.
Blaineās heart rises up to his throat. āYeah, that sounds good! I do enjoy some bumper bowlingā¦ā
āI know dude. The one time you beat Santana, Tina and Finn, all you wanted to do was go bowling for weeks after. Do you want to just meet there orā¦?ā Sam teased.
āIāll just meet you there, if thatās cool. Iāll head out now!ā Blaine said, immediately looking for a pair of socks.
āYouāll probably beat me there, so just get us all set up alright? See you in ten.ā
______________
āHey, I donāt want to bring the mood down, but umā¦can I ask you something?ā Blaine asked, eating another french fry.
āYes, we can play another round after you eat. Iām not doing much else tonight.ā Sam agreed with a shrug, staring at Blaineās plate.
āNo, not about that. I mean, Iām glad you still wanna play, even after I just beat you. But my question is about Quinn, actually. You guys dated, right?ā Blaine tried to broach the subject slowly, because heās only heard bits and pieces of what happened, and he doesnāt want to upset Sam at all.
It only sort of works, because Sam visibly tensed before taking a deep breath in. āYeah, we dated when I first came to Lima. What about her?ā
āSheā¦she cheated on you with Finn, yeah?ā Blaine had a hard time making eye contact with his best friend, and he felt slightly nauseous at the influx of emotions (and shitty bowling alley potatoes) stirring in his belly.
āYeah. Santana used Finnās stupid kissing booth to give them both mono while it happened. Itās um. Not a chapter I look back on nicely.ā Samās voice sounded tired more than angry, which is what gave Blaine the courage to look up and meet his eyes.
āDid you ever forgive her? Or Finn? Likeā¦did that scar you for life or anything?ā Blaine wrenched his hands together underneath the table, trying to keep his nerves in check.
āOkay, I know this isnāt actually about me and Quinn, but Iām going to entertain your question anyway.ā Samās smile is small, but it was comforting enough to make Blaine feel a little less nervous. āForgiving Quinn wasnāt that hard, actually. I mean, yeah, it still hurts like hell if I think about it too hard, but sheās a really good person and I know that. When I saw her at church the week my house got foreclosed on, I knew she was somebody I could trust. Somebody who would have my back. Plus I think, after Beth and all, it was good for her to be around the little guys. My siblings really liked having her around. Finn was a little harder to get over, but I knew it wasnāt personal against me or anything. He was just really trying to get over Rachel I think, but he ended up making everyone more upset in the process, himself included. And now weāre roommates and play video games a good portion of the day. Itās kind of weird, with him helping run the glee club and all right now, but whatever. Does that make you feel any better?ā
Blaine smiled a little, looking down at his lap. āYeah, a little. But likeā¦are you okay? Like, even if you knew it wasnāt personal, did that make dating Mercedes hard?ā
āNot really. I mean yeah, Iāll never forget it, but I knew it was a one-off thing. Well, I mean, I knew she cheated on Finn with Puck, but that was another weird thing. I donāt think she really meant to hurt anyone either time. If I got cheated on again, Iād be fucking pissed though. But I knew Mercedes wasnāt that kind of girl. Iām okay now, Blaine. Time fixes a lot, and honestly? Perspective fixes a lot too.ā Blaine tries to reach for another fry, but Sam grabs his hand before he makes it to the plate. āHeāll forgive you. I promise. It may not go back to what it was before, but that can be a good thing. Someday, when youāre adults, like real actual adults, you can write it off as teenage hormones or something. Ku-ā Sam cut himself off, unsure if Blaine could handle hearing his name. But he swallowed and nodded politely. āBlaine. Kurt will forgive you. I promise. He cares about you so much. What you guys have going on, thatās not something that will fade away overnight, and nothing he can just forget about. Iām gonna be honest and say I wouldnāt be surprised if he didnāt want to date again, at least not for a while, but heāll be back. I promise. If, for no other reason than Burt and Carole still ask about you a bunch. Youāre a part of him, and heās always going to be a part of you. Youāre gonna be okay, man. I promise.ā Samās smile was warm, and Blaine could feel every single word echo inside his head.
āThank you, Sam. Really. Youāre the best best friend a man could ever ask for, you know that?ā Blaine moved his hand to give Samās a squeeze, before they both let go and Blaine could continue to eat his fries.
āHell yeah I do. Now finish eating those half-cold oily monsters so I can beat you this time.ā
It was a quiet night in Bushwick, which was rare in New York City, especially for the tail-end of May. Kurt swears he hasnāt heard a car alarm or police sirens in the last three hours, which was almost unheard of. The white noise of the city seems dampened, and Kurt is reveling in it. Blaine went to bed hours ago, and Kurt almost feels bad for not still laying down with him. Figuring out how to live with each other again now that Rachel has moved out has been fun, interesting. That doesnāt mean that it isnāt also exhausting.
Kurt loves Blaine, but sometimes he really misses having his alone time. Blaine always wants to be doing something, and Kurt enjoys a nice lounge every now and then. It wasnāt that big of a deal, and Blaine is learning that sometimes itās best to leave Kurt to his own devices. But Kurt did feel like he was distancing himself from his fiance, and that did make him feel really, really bad.
And this is how Kurt ended up here, sprawled out across the entirety of what used to be Rachelās bedroom, in the very wee hours of the morning, making Blaine a new collection of bowties.
Kurt liked being able to do this for him, itās been a while since heās made Blaine anything. There were a couple of old shirts that Kurt couldnāt (or didnāt want to) wear anymore, and as much as it hurt Kurtās soul to cut into the velvet jacket that he wore during Artieās televised Christmas special, Kurt canāt help but admit that knowing that Blaine will get more use out of it now brings a smile to his face.
Kurt had been in this rhythm for a little while now, tracing his pattern with a chalk pencil before cutting the fabric, sewing up the side-seams, flipping the bow tie right-side out, ironing the whole thing flat, and then finishing the last bit of stitching. Kurt had made 8 ties before he realized that it was nearing 4 in the morning, and that he should probably lay down with his dearest.
After placing Blaineās new presents in a decorative box on their bed side table (and writing a sticky note for on top of the box that simply read ābecause I love youā) Kurt started getting dressed for bed. He carefully lifts up one edge of their comforter before stopping what heās doing completely.
The barest traces of sunlight are starting to peek in through the windows, swaddling Blaine in soft light. Heās snoring lightly, lips parted, and his hair is sticking up in every which way, covering most of his forehead in loose, slightly frizzy coils. And Kurt canāt help but just...look at him. He glances down at his hand, noticing how the brighter atmosphere makes his engagement ring glint. He looks at Blaineās hand, which is currently outstretched over Kurtās half of the bed, and looks at his engagement ring too.
He wishes that he could talk to himself from his freshman year of high school. Here, in this silence, with the world just starting to wake up...everything is perfect, everything is as it should be.
Kurt slips into bed, sliding underneath Blaineās arm, and brushes a few stray curls to kiss his forehead. He knows that nothing can stay forever, but here, in this moment, everything has finally fallen into place.

(i know i said i was going to post old klaine advent entries on AO3 only but i'm so happy with this one that i'm posting it here too!)
Rachel storms downstairs, hoping that Kurt and Blaine are still sitting on the couch in the living room. She can hear Finn stomping down the stairs behind her, and sheās sure heās saying something, but all she can hear is her own blood rushing through her ears.
āAHA!ā She triumphs, pointing at Blaine still wrapped around Kurtās side while The Princess Diaries continues to play on the television.
Kurt gives Rachel a slow blink, eyebrows gradually raising the more he stares. āUmā¦can we help you, Rachel?ā He asks, pausing the movie.
āYes, yes you can.ā She says not to them, but to Finn whoās making his way into the living room behind her.
āWhatās this all about Ra-ā Blaine begins, but is quickly cut off by Rachel whipping her head around and pointing at the both of them.
āKurt, your vocals have always been sub-par to mine, and your ears and ridiculous wardrobe make you look like the Keebler elf!ā Rachel rushes to get out, a big smile on her face. Kurt is too flabbergasted to notice that sheās looking directly at Blaine, and not Kurt when she talks.
Kurtās mouth drops open, and before he can get a word out, Blaine sits up off of the couch. āWhat the hell has gotten into you, Rachel? How dare you talk to Kurt like that?ā His triangular eyebrows sit low over his eyes, and he has one of his hands protectively over Kurtās knee.
āI knew it!ā Rachel spins back around to glare at Finn. āYou see that! Thatās what Iām asking for!ā
Blaineās anger is momentarily replaced by confusion, as both Kurt and Blaine look up to see Finn with his jaw completely slack and his shoulders hunched up in almost an āI donāt knowā shrug. Kurtās voice is low and quiet when he speaks. āWhat is this all about, Rach.ā
āThank you for the demonstration, boys, but your work is done here. Kurt, you know I didnāt mean a word of it, youāre amazing and I adore you. I just needed to show Finn how itās supposed to be!ā
āWhat on Earth-ā Blaine tries to get out, but Rachelās already started talking again.
āPeople have been saying very rude things to me in the hallway and on the comments of every video Iāve ever posted to my Facebook page, and Finn refuses to defend me. āJust ignore themā he says, but if you would just stand up for me, the way a REAL boyfriend would, then they would stop! I mean, look at them!ā Rachel explains, gesturing to the boys behind her while her pleading eyes are staring at her boyfriend. āThey are always telling each other to ignore me during class, which is fine, not everyone agrees with my always-correct artistic integrity, but when I started being mean, they couldnāt just ignore it! Blaine stood up and defended his partner! Thatās what weāre supposed to be, Finn. Partners! Why donāt you ever support me like that?ā
Kurt and Blaine look at each other for a moment, half honored at the praise and half deeply uncomfortable at the exchange happening in front of them. āShould we go?ā Kurt asks, slowly looking between his brother and his boyfriend.
āShe did say demonstration over. Do you want to finish the movie in your room?ā Blaine asks quietly with a small shrug.
āDefinitely. I know Rachel thinks weāre perfect, but just wait until you see Queen Clarisse and Joe in the sequel.ā
Blaine was pacing around the apartment in circles, waiting for Kurt to get home from Vogue. He had just gotten a letter from NYADA in the mail, and to say that he was freaking out was a severe understatement.
After about two hours of pacing, sitting, twitching and fidgeting, Kurt finally, finally comes home.
āItās um...ah...well Iām fine, itās justā¦ā Blaine tries a weak smile, but he gestures to the letter thatās sitting on the living room table in front of him.
Kurt approaches carefully, and asks if he can take the letter. Blaine nods, and Kurt bends down to grab the papers on the table. Quickly reading, Blaine sees Kurtās face light up brighter and brighter with each word. Which makes his own stomach sink. āBlaine! This is so exciting! Carmen Tibideaux doesnāt send personalized letters about freshman orientation to just anyone, you know. Youāre going to kill this semester, I just know it.ā
Blaine stares at the floor, a small, self deprecating laugh escapes. āIām glad you do.ā
Kurt sits next to him on the couch, and rests a hand on his shoulder. āHey, whatās that supposed to mean? Your orientation is Thursday! We start classes together in two weeks! This is supposed to be exciting, and yet you look like you just ate something Rachel cooked.ā
āI know, I know. Itās just...this is all feeling so real, you know? It feels a little silly but...Iām really scared, Kurt.ā Blaine admits quietly, still wringing his hands together and trying not to make eye contact with Kurt. āItās like...I know Iāve been to a bunch of schools before. That part doesnāt scare me, and if anything itāll be nice to make some New York friends and all but...this city is just so big, and I feel so small.ā
āYouāre sad, so I wonāt make a silly height joke because I love you. You are just as big as this city, love. Youāre gonna be able to do so much, youāre gonna have so much room to succeed and to grow, and Iām so excited to be able to see it. I know you had similar thoughts right before your audition, but you killed that! College is going to be a breeze. Especially because,ā Kurt playfully bumps his shoulder into Blaineās, āweāre doing this together.ā
Blaine is still freaking the hell out about starting school soon, but Kurtās words from a few months earlier ring in his head. āI canāt stop you from failing, but I promise to make it safe if you do.ā
āYou really are my knight in shining armor, huh?ā Blaine says, feeling the sting of tears behind his eyes. āHow did I get so lucky?ā
āYouāre good with directions, thatās how, you silly goose. Imagine if I had to find the practice room at Dalton all by myself, I probably wouldāve missed my favorite Katy Perry cover.ā Kurt teases, resting his head on Blaineās shoulder. āIn all seriousness though, are you alright? I can probably take you on a campus tour myself if youād like, Mr. Fliss will probably let me pick out my locker for dance class a little early if I show up and ask.ā
āMaybe? Weāll see after initial orientation. I donāt want to be the smarmy guy who knows more than all the other freshman, you know? I donāt want to seem...pompous.ā Blaine says, thinking about just how low his chances of making friends would be if he wasnāt paying attention during the tours.
āYou? Pompous? Oh please, youāre no Sebastian Smythe. Youāre like a human ray of sunshine, my dear. Thereās no way they wonāt love you.ā
Blaine, for the first time all day, cracks a smile. āI sure hope so.ā
āWould a pizza and a āSay Yes To The Dressā marathon make you feel better?ā Kurt offers, giving Blaineās hand a light squeeze.
(i'm finally fully caught up on advent entries! yay!! feel free to read all of my entries on AO3, or read today's entry below the cut.)
āOh my god, Finn. This isnāt a round of Global Offensive.ā Kurt groans as his step-brother leans around the corner, trying to keep a careful eye out for their classmates.
āIām just trying to - wait, how do you know what Counterstrike is?ā Finn is briefly distracted from his mission so he can face Kurt, which is his downfall.
Artie is pushed around the corner Finn was just looking at, and he fires a Nerf gun directly at the small of his back. Kurt quickly ducks, and manages to shoot Artie in his knee, and Puck in the chest.
āAw, what!ā Artie groans, resting his plastic gun in his lap. āThat was cheap.ā
āYeah, no fair, Hummel! Youāve got the worldās biggest human shield on your side.ā Puck agrees, gesturing towards Finn.
āShut it. Iām just a better shot than all of you, and you guys are gonna get me spotted. Just head towards Blaineās room, Iām sure youāll be joined by others soon.ā Kurt whispers, shooing the three boys away.
They all sulk towards the designated āsafe houseā as Kurt quickly checks that his phone is on vibrate only.
It was Mikeās idea for a Nerf war while Blaineās parents were out of town, and the rules were pretty simple. Everyone plays on just the main floor of Blaineās house, so that way nobody can hide upstairs or in the basement, especially because Blaineās house isnāt super wheelchair accessible for Artie. Mike brought his collection of Nerf guns, and Finn and Puck had a fair amount of their own as well, so everyone has at least one weapon. Every light was turned off, and no doors were allowed to be closed, except for Blaineās bedroom, where everyone who has lost is to meet up so that way the battlefield is empty of ācorpses.ā Losers were to send in a text to the group chat, letting everyone know who is still in the game. Brittany was out first, after she walked away from Santana to get a glass of water from the kitchen. Other than the three morons who just got themselves shot, everyone else still seems to be in the game.
Kurt makes sure to keep a watchful eye out, slowly making his way down the hallway and towards the family room. Heās lucky heās dressed for the occasion, because Kurtās darker outfit and hair allow him to blend in to the walls fairly easily.
Unlike Samās very blonde hair, which is barely peeking out from behind the Anderson family piano.
Quickly scanning the rest of the room, he realizes that if anyone else was in here, they probably wouldāve shot at Sam already, so Kurt as quietly as possible, slinks along the wall to his right to get a better angle at Sam. Headshots were technically fair game, but everyone agreed to keep them at a minimum because this is for fun, and not actual warfare.
Kurt is suddenly very glad he decided to not just shoot at Sam outright, because Mercedes is also crouched next to Sam. Oh, this was done on purpose. Mercedes Jones, you are one clever lady. Too bad youāve met your match.
Kurt quickly drops to his knees, and manages to shoot both of them in the shoulder. They both let out a little gasp, and look behind them. Kurt gives a small wave, and whispers sorry as quietly as he can. Sam and Mercedes look at each other, give out a small groan, and stand up to walk towards Blaineās room.
āGood luck, man.ā Sam whispers back, giving Kurt a supportive pat on the shoulder.
āYouāve got this, boo. Kick some ass for us.ā Mercedes leans down to whisper at him, and gives him a kiss on the cheek.
Kurt smiles, and checks his phone for any more updates. Apparently Santana has already gunned down Quinn and Rachel, but Mike managed to get Santana.
Blaine, Mike and Tina is all thatās left, then.
Kurt and Blaine decided to split up, but Kurt is unsure if Mike and Tina are playing as singles or as a team. Puck was upfront about wanting to play with Artie, he knew that Artie was the better shot of the two of them and he wanted to make sure Artie could still use his hands to shoot, but everyone else tried to keep pretty quiet about if they were teaming up or not.
Kurt stays low to the ground, and starts making his way to the dining room.
Halfway down the hallway though, he hears a loud āclickā and the sound of a foam dart hitting the wall behind him.
āDammit.ā He hears Tina mutter, theoretically, to herself.
He looks to his left, and while he can hear Tina, he canāt really see her. He shoots towards the sounds sheās making, but thereās no indication of a hit. Kurt has the sense to keep his frustrations inside his head.
He quickly walks past the doorframe Tina must have shot him from, and he hides in the bathroom for a moment. The door is wide open, so it doesnāt offer much protection, but at least that way he knows nobody is going to sneak up behind him. He feels his phone buzz, and apparently Blaine managed to find Tina first.
Which means heās close. Kurt immediately turns his phone off again, keeping a poised eye on the hallway heās facing.
Sure heās the love of my life, but heās absolutely lost it if he thinks Iām going to let him win.
Keeping a trained eye on the space in front of him, Kurt anxiously awaits seeing Blaineās perfectly sculpted head peek aroundā¦and thereās nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Kurt feels another buzz, and tries to contain his groan.
Itās just Kurt and Blaine left. He mustāve gone in the opposite direction after eliminating Tina, and managed to catch Mike too.
Kurt grits his teeth, and slowly exits the bathroom. āCome on out, my love! Itās just us, you know youāre safe.ā He hears Blaine call, but he doesnāt sound very close.
āAs if, the only person who hates losing more than Rachel is you, dear.ā Kurt responds, and he can hear a very faint āHEY!ā from Rachel in the safe house.
He knows heās getting close, because Blaineās footfalls are a little bit heavier than Kurtās. Not noticeably, to most people. But Kurt would know that quiet pitter-patter anywhere.
Kurt sock-slides across the hardwood in the living room, and manages to clip his boyfriend in the thigh.
āGoddammit.ā Blaine sighs, dropping his arm to his side.
Kurt blows pretend smoke off the barrel of his Nerf gun, and pretends to holster it to his side. āGame, set, match.ā
āYouāre lucky youāre cute. If anyone else had shot me, Iād say we couldnāt play this anymore.ā Blaine pouts, sticking hit bottom lip out dramatically.
Kurt rolls his eyes, and grabs his boyfriend. āItās an honor to kill you, darling.ā
āYeah yeah, go gloat to everyone else.ā Blaine says, a smile returning to his face.
Kurt and Blaine walk hand in hand to Blaineās room, and Kurt triumphantly raises his gun in the air.
Thereās not as much cheer as Kurt would like, but heāll bask in whatever glory he can take.
