Many termite species in North Australia are yet to be named by scientists. While scientists are still working on a species name for this impressive but undescribed species of the Nasutitermes genus, it has been known to the Nawarddeken Bininj Kunwok speakers of the West Arnhem Plateau as Djibdjib for many thousands of years.
A soldier of the genus nasutitermes, or nailheaded termites. The soldier excretes bad-smelling liquid from the nozzle on his head to deter predators.
