Shrub to the right, with the purpling leaves, is a Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica), a shrub that, while not a bamboo, combines all of bamboo's annoying qualities with berries that birds like to drop on Dad's work truck. There is so. much. nandina in this yard. I do not understand why Mom and Dad chose a shrub that requires constant pruning, not just to force it to maintain a shape, but also to remove the berries before Dad's work truck is smeared purple. I swear Mom's propensity to make choices out of malicious curiosity to see how people would react drove her gardening decisions.

This gateway in Cambridge, UK, was flanked by impressive specimens of Nandina domestica (heavenly bamboo, Chinese sacred bamboo, sacred bamboo) covered with berries. An upright, elegant evergreen shrub with a bamboo-like habit can reach 2m in height. Plants thrive in a moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered position with full sun.
