A bill that would ban schools from teaching abstinence-only sex education is making its way through the Colorado state Legislature.
A bill making it illegal to teach abstinence-only sex education in public schools in Colorado is likely to pass in this legislative session. The chief House sponsors are Rep. Susan Lontine (D-01) and Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-31) and the Senate sponsors are Sen. Nancy Todd (D-28) and Don Coram (R-06).
HB 19-1032 passed in the House by a vote of: 39 Ayes, 23 Nays, and 2 excused (presumably absent). There's currently 1 House vacancy. All the votes in favor were cast by Democrats and all those opposed were Republicans. Because co-sponsor Sen. Coram is a Republican, HB 19-1032 should get at least 1 GOP vote in the upper chamber.
The bill is now in Senate committee. Democratic Gov. Jared Polis who is openly gay is almost certain to sign this bill when it reaches his desk.
This is a direct slap in the face to the Trump administration which has been heavily pushing abstinence-only. It’s ironic and hypocritical that Trump himself is not exactly a big fan of abstinence.
