"I'm so sorry I let this happen to you."
"Come on, now. You’ve lived through worse than this. Just… Just live through this too.""Please, fight this. You have to fight it. You have to live."
"No--it wasn’t…your fault."
In truth, it wasn’t. It wasn’t even really his own fault. It wasn’t any of theirs. The only person whose fault it was the unknown individual that decided they no longer wanted their queen on her throne. The meal had been served to her, but she had offered him the first bite as a courtesy. He wasn’t familiar with the culinary dishes of this kingdom, so she offered to allow him to taste it. But the food had been cursed with some type of magic—the fatal kind.
The magic worked quickly to take its toll on his body. First came the sensation of being lightheaded, followed by collapse. Then came the slow severing of the nerves, disabling his ability to even move. The magic itself may have been quick, but the effects were far slower. Almost as if he were being subjected to agonizing torture; which he knew all too well what that was like. Whatever curative magic and medicine they had attempted failed. It was eating away at him, suffocating him. Breaths came in short ragged gasps. She was shaking him, begging him to continue on as if it would snap him out of this attack. Fight he had, but his vision was starting to blur, voices becoming faint and distant. His time was almost up.
There wasn't much he could say at a time like this, let alone capable of saying. Â He hadn't even gotten a real chance to get to know her. Yet here he was, dying in her arms. Not really the way he expected to go. Fate had decided against him, it seemed.
"Sorry--...couldn't get--" A sharp intake of breath. "--coffee."
A cup of coffee. Something they had planned to do, but had never gotten the chance. He'd have to opt out this time. There was only one other thing he could think of to say to her. There were those that had intentions to cross her off, though he couldn't understand why. She seemed to really care about her people, and her friends. Hopefully she'd take his last words to heart.
"--Be careful...out there."
Like the flick of a switch, he stopped.
