The dragonglass-black gown with ember-like red embellishments had been gifted to Naerys by her mother on the girl’s seventeenth name day.

The princess Rhaenyra was quite fond of bestowing sumptuous gifts to her young daughter, most of which having belonged to her at one point. Though the girl much preferred her Velaryon teals and warmer toned Essosi fabrics, her mother insisted on cloaking her in the dramatic blacks and reds of house Targaryen.

“If it is what you want, it will be done.” Rhaenyra's hands tightened around her daughters, feverishly hot and still blemished red. “My Daemon will return with his head, and once he does I’ll have it skewered on a spike for my little girl.” She promised. 

Naerys would have laughed if all of this had felt more real. She remembered her mother promising her horses and pearls and bolts of silk with a similar intonation.

“If a swift death does not please you, my love, I could have him kept alive." She took her daughter's other hand. If it stung it did not show on her face. "In any way, the marriage will be voided. What happened in that sept was nothing less than absolute treason.”

She nodded to everything her mother said. Yet her voice strained when it came time for her to speak. “But... mother, what of the--” She glanced down at her middle, a subtle bump there that could have been mistaken for her being well fed.

Rhaenyra took a breath in through her nose. It took her a long moment to respond. “Sweetling… he would have a traitor for a father…”

Naerys squeezed her mother’s hand, trembling from her own heartbeat. She would have already been familiar with the answer to that, yet it shook her all the same. Words came slow to her. “But, if you pardon him... and then kill him…?”

Rhaenyra let out a breath of a laugh, in spite of it all. “My love, that would be senseless.” 

Naerys sighed. “I don’t know.” She would have ripped her tongue from her throat just to feel a shred of normalcy again. Her sight grew blurry with tears before she even knew she was crying. “I don’t know, mumma…”

So in the story I began writing for them months ago (and haven't finished), the whole thing is more of a hostage situation than any sort of functioning relationship. The whole deal is that her marriage to Aemond is a last-minute decision by the greens to try and persuade the greens to agree to a stalemate.

I've been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to writing about her story. It's funny, I draw her so much and keep thinking of her, but as far as a coherent story goes, it's a bit lacking.

I am AWFUL at making things concise so here's my attempt at her synopsis. I'll go into more depth later (I pray).

In short, she's daughter to Princess Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon, firstborn. She's like her mother in many ways, but she gravitated more towards her Velaryon heritage-- more salt and sea than fire and blood. As a babe she was given an egg which petrified, never to hatch.

Among the things she favored: textiles and finery from Myr. She holds a deep fascination for the cultures of the Free Cities. Loves to sail, among her favorite memories are sailing along with her father and supping on crab dipped in butter.

Both her father and mother she adored, but more so her father. Her father's death was a major turning point in her life, as well as the death of her betrothed some years later, Aethan Manderly (oc). Beyond that, her relationship with her family is either hot or cold-- she idolized Lord Corlys and Ser Vaemond and grew to mislike her brothers.

As far as demeanor goes, the one word I would use to describe her is immoderate. In vices most especially, she drinks often, uses food to cope, tries to hold too tightly to whom she loves, and holds an unhealthy amount of hate for those she despises.

Her lore is most fleshed out pre-dance, it's still a bit cloudy when the war actually begins. That's where her story becomes an AU, where the war takes a bit longer to actually start.

So, about that madness arc...

In the past week I've wanted to make big changes to the latter half of her story, one of them being that. I've decided to rework the "madness" arc and put her in a different position. She doesn't go mad, per se, its more of a struggle with envy and vitriol in reaction to perceived slights from both the greens and the blacks. For example, the legitimization of Addam and Alyn did piss her the hell off.

Aemond doesn't care much for her. He's more occupied with seething than with whatever she's going through in King's Landing. This apathy eats at her, since she feels she has no one else. She is more maddened, if anything, by the fact of her being isolated and witness to her beloved family being picked off by the Dance. She is hanging on a razor's edge of how many heartbreaks she can suffer.

I would love to know about Naerys in a specific way: is she more inclined towards the Velaryons?

I update/polish her lore semi-regularly (she's still a work in progress) but I do so on a big google doc that I haven't made public anywhere. Snippets of her lore I post to my instagram stories and even then they aren't really organized.

However, I'd like to post about her in chunks on here under a specific tag, just so her story isn't gate-kept on just one platform. And it'd be a good writing exercise for me, I think (you will learn very quickly that I am not a writer lmao).
