Shooting Approaches
Went for a hop today in the Dakota with Travis and Curtis. Weather was calling for some high winds so I thought it would be a good time to brush up on some approach work. Took off from BDU, headed east and got vectors for the ILS 29R at KBJC. Hand flew the entire thing and had the needles pegged all the way down the pipe. Had about a 17 knot crosswind, but it was steady so correction was no big deal. Travis has the Foreflight app on his iPad that shows your position on the approach plate. What an amazing improvement for situational awareness. Did a low approach and then headed south east towards KAPA at 7500MSL. Denver Approach put us on a vector parallel to the ILS track then turned us inbound about 3 miles from the FAF. We had a massive tailwind that picked up significantly about 3 miles from the threshold and kept us high near the end of the approach. Managed to get vertical needle back on center about 20 seconds from hitting mda. They had us turn out for a left downwind and then allowed us to head north to BJC then to Boulder. Fun flying.
