HAPPY PIONEER DAY! Brothers and sisters, no one throws a parade like the Mormons on July 24th in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is bigger than the Fourth of July. I cannot avoid it or disparage it--as my writing studio is a block away from all the action. This is just a tiny glimpse, a fraction of the armies and armies of Mormondom marching and watching--as I returned home from the gym. Almost all of Mormon Americana and the Mountain West is on display. As a Son of the Utah Pioneers--handcart pullers from 1850-something--I celebrate and applaud my people's achievements here in the deserts of the mighty West I am one of those achievements in my own special, humble way.
