I sauntered back in, the item Isolde had been yearning for clutched in my hand. "Hey, I'm back. Got you the thing you've been pining for. Sorry I vanished yesterday."

Isolde locked eyes with me, her expression a cocktail of concern and amusement. "Well, you certainly know how to make an exit and an entrance. What's this, your version of a peace offering?"

As she took the item, her eyes narrowed, as if gauging the sincerity of my gesture. "Thanks," she finally said, "but don't think this gets you off the hook for disappearing."

Her fierce, witty demeanor was back, but I couldn't shake the feeling that my absence had unsettled her, if only a bit.
