RWBY Weapon Review: Myrtenaster
Weiss Schnee. Granddaughter of a hero, child of a villain, citizen of a fallen kingdom, and heir to nothing. Hers is a story about carving out an identity and a destiny of one’s own. She has faced challenges and hardships all along the way, with and without her friends, but her one companion through thick and thin has always been her trusty weapon Myrtenaster.
Hello and welcome to RWBY Weapon Review Wednesday, where I analyze RWBY weapons and score them based on five criteria.
These criteria are Design, Short Range, Long Range, Mobility, and Versatility. There will also be a bonus round where the weapon can earn bonus points.
I’m doing them in order of appearance, and it’s time to take a look at the second weapon we get to see in the history of the franchise
Description Built by Weiss herself, Myrtenaster is a multi action dust rapier. While it may appear at first glance to be a regular rapier (and it can be used as such), things get a bit more interesting when we look at the handle. Just above the handle is a revolver chamber-like mechanism, which can house up to six vials of different kinds of dust. There’s a trigger and a hammer that can be used to activate the dust effects.
Design I’d say Myrtenaster is tied with Ember Celica as the most simply designed weapon in Team RWBY. It might be the simplest, actually, because it’s just a sword with a revolver chamber. With Ember Celica, it takes a little bit to figure out how they work, while Myrtenaster is a lot more intuitive, I think.
It’s a simple design, but not plain, which I feel fits Weiss. Because her semblance is so complex, she doesn’t really need a cool or flashy weapon, so Myrtenaster is elegant, but functional. In Weiss’ hands, it is both a sword, and a magic wand. 7/10
Short Range It’s a sword, which are famously pretty good melee weapons. Not much to say here, it’s just pretty good. 6/10
Long Range This one’s a little harder to judge, because Weiss usually channels dust through her glyphs for her long ranged attacks. However, she can also channel dust directly through the blade to perform a ranged attack… but the range isn’t that great. 4/10
Mobility Myrtenaster suffers in this category, as it does very little to help with Weiss’ mobility. Granted, she doesn’t really need any help, her semblance makes her one of the most mobile fighters in the show. She can even fly! No thanks to Myrtenaster though. 0/10
Versatility This is where Weiss and Myrtenaster shine. Even without taking her semblance into account, the sword can hold up to six vials of different kinds of dust, giving her plenty of options. Add her ability to channel dust through her semblance, and Weiss is easily one of the most versatile fighters in the show, and a lot of that is thanks to Myrtenaster. The only reason I’m not making it a ten out of ten is because it is so lacking in ranged and mobility options. 9/10
Bonus Round! Myrten aster is the German name for a flower, the common myrtle, which is usually white. Apparently, it’s associated with love and weddings. Soooooo… a white flower… associated with love… Whiterose confirmed!!??!??? Two bonus points!
Final Score Weiss Schnee’s Myrtenaster gets a final score of 28/50
A bit on the lower end for the ice queen. But consider; the reason Weiss did not get an upgrade in Volume 7 is because her fighting style was already perfect, and that’s just not me saying that because I love Weiss, that’s what the writers said. Like I’ve pointed out again and again, Weiss’ strength comes not from the size or power of her weapon, but from her semblance, from her very soul. Myrtenaster just enhances it.
In the White trailer, Weiss sings about being feeling lonely. Suffice it to say, I don’t think she feels alone anymore, not with all of her friends at her side. And in battle, she shines, not as the star fighter of her team, but as the ultimate support. From the loneliest of all, to being supported by, and supporting her newfound family.
She wasn’t always that pleasant to be around, but with a little warmth and a little patience, the ice queen thawed out become a nice queen.
That’s all I’ve got for now, be sure to check back in next week when I take a look at Blake Belladonna’s Gambol Shroud!
Confession #1089
Thinking about it now, Myrtenaster would probably be really uncomfortable to wear on the belt, or at least annoying.
Looking at images of Myrtenaster actually sheathed on Weiss' belt, it sticks out quite a bit.
That's not an insignificant amount, but with how high on her waist Myrtenaster is, it might get in the way less. If Myrtenaster didn't have her Dust cylinder, then it would probably be much less pronounced.
Her left arm would constantly have to move around Myrtenaster's handle and probably bump into it, too. Plus, there are pointy bits that could stab you
I've been watching a lot of stuff about HEMA and fencing lately, so I thought about how Myrtenaster would be to carry.
Maybe this is why she almost never has it at her side?
It's inconvenient for sure
Or maybe it's just not necessary in a lot of scenes!

Fictional Weapon War Round 1
Myrtenaster (RWBY) vs Funkfreed (One Piece)
Which is the cooler weapon?
Myrtenaster
Funkfreed
Mod comments:
Funkfreed seems so silly. I never thought I'd see an elephant that could turn into a weapon.
Myrtenaster looks really cool from what I've seen of it, especially the elemental aspect of its attacks.
